Denver Department of Public Health Says Purina Stinks – Truth about Pet Food

The Purina Pet Food plant in Denver, CO has received numerous fines in recent years for “exceeding odorous air contamination laws“. The Purina plant recently received another “$7,000 penalty from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment”.

KDVR.com stated in 2023: “The Nestlé Purina plant has been deemed one of the smelliest places in the Mile High City based on odor complaints reported to the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment.”

Purina signed an agreement with the city of Denver “to comply with regulations regarding odor emissions”, however the plant appears to still be releasing odorous air (and has for years). “In 2021, the City of Denver fined Purina $12,000 for repeated emissions of noxious odors.”

This Purina plant is being sued by neighbors for the odors as well. “A group of residents filed a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in May alleging noxious fumes from the pet food plant are so bad that people who live nearby should be compensated for their loss of property value and quality of life.

Personal experience: I’ve been to Denver several times. When you travel from the airport into the city, you pass the Purina plant along the way. And I completely agree with the ‘stinky’ classification from the Denver Health Department and the area residents…it’s a BAD smell coming from that plant (noticed each time I’ve traveled to Denver).

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
