The ADATA Legend 970 Pro 2TB Doesn’t Need No Stinking Cables

Talk About Fan Power!

ADATA found a way to make their new Legend 970 Pro SSDs stand out amongst the competition, by designing a fan which can be powered by the electricity delivered by the M.2 slot.  This makes it the only actively cooled PCIe 5.0 SSD available on the market, at least as far as we can tell.  That means you don’t have to run a cable to the SSD, which can limit where you can install the drive.

Internally, Micron 232-Layer 3D TLC B58R flash provides storage and the new Innogrit IG5666 PCIe 5.0 controller fulfills your need for speed.  The drive has a step-up-controller on the PCB to change the 3.3V input from the M.2 to to the 12V required to run the tiny fan.  TechPowerUp’s thermal testing shows the design’s effectiveness, for the Legend 970 Pro never suffers from thermal throttling.

The new controller tops the IOPS charts and while it might not come out on the top on every benchmark it is never in the bottom half.  There is a bit of a price premium for the speed and the internally powered fan, the 2TB model was spotted selling for $300.  For those who obsess over clean builds and top tier performance should take a gander at the full review.
