UNESCO world heritage site in Versilia, Tuscany

In the latest episode of the Italia Slow Tour web series, which explores the Medici Villas of Tuscany, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Syusy Blady visits one of the most remote historical palaces from Florence: the Medici Palace of Seravezza, an elegant villa built by Cosimo I in Versilia.

Although more remote, this area was strategic due to its rich resources of silver, iron, and marble. Over the centuries, the palace has had numerous owners and uses, and today it is owned by the municipality of Seravezza and hosts various events and exhibitions.

During the Medici era, the villa was frequented by historical figures such as Bianca Cappello and Francesco I, and later by Maria Cristina of Lorraine, wife of Grand Duke Ferdinando, who is remembered for catching an exceptional trout, immortalized on top of the well, the only original architectural element from the Medici era still intact.

Today, the Palace continues to celebrate Versilia’s culture and traditions with significant events. Learn more on the website of the Foundation that manages it.
