The G7 leaders have called on Israel to exercise “restraint” in its response to the firing of over 180 ballistic missiles at its territory by Iran’s Islamic regime this week. The coalition, consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, has forcefully denounced “in the strongest terms Iran’s direct military attack against Israel, which constitutes a serious threat to regional stability.”
This group has highlighted the urgent need to halt Iran’s deployment of terrorist proxy groups across the region. However, they have cautioned against “retaliation,” stating it “risks fueling uncontrollable escalation in the Middle East, which is in no one’s interest.” The statement emphasizes, “Therefore, we call on all regional players to act responsibly and with restraint,” and “We encourage all parties to engage constructively to de-escalate the current tensions.”
Furthermore, the G7 has issued a call for “an immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” where Israel is actively engaging in military operations against Hamas. Hamas, described as an Iranian-supported genocidal terrorist group, was responsible for the deaths of 1,200 individuals in a terror attack a year prior.
Their concern extends to “the situation in Lebanon,” where Israel is combating Hezbollah. Described as an Iranian-supported terrorist organization, Hezbollah stands as possibly the most significant, sophisticated, and best-armed terrorist group globally. Since the terror attack by Hamas on October 7, Hezbollah has launched an estimated 9,000 missiles, rockets, and drones at northern Israel, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of Israelis for almost a year.
President Joe Biden clarified on Wednesday that the G7’s statement would be released only after a consensus is reached among all member countries, including the Biden-Harris administration.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), in a post on X, likened the G7’s statement to “the 1930’s all over again.” He criticized Iran’s regime as a theocracy intent on annihilating the Jewish state, expelling the West from the Middle East, and hindering reconciliation between the Arab world and Israel. He stated, “The Ayatollah is a religious Nazi. Iran is not trying to build peaceful nuclear power plants. The regime is trying to build a nuclear bomb to achieve its religious objectives. If you don’t understand that, you’re not listening to what Iran is saying and you’re not watching what they are doing throughout the world.”
Graham further argued, “The idea of telling Israel what targets to strike ignores reality and is the mentality that existed in the 1930’s,” and he added, “To my friends in Israel, one holocaust directed at the Jewish people is enough. Do what you have to do to defend yourselves against those who would kill you simply because you are Jewish.”
