    Recently, Teresa, de la rueca a la pluma (a blog specializing in the life and work of Teresa de la Cruz, aka Teresa de Ávila), announced that one of our leading scholars of Spanish literature, Luce López-Baralt, was awarded the 20th Teresa de Ávila Literature Prize [XX Premio de las Letras ‘Teresa de Ávila’].

    Luce López-Baralt (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1944), considered one of the greatest experts in Spanish and Islamic mysticism, she has been awarded the XX ‘Teresa de Ávila’ Literature Prize granted by the Ávila City Council.

    The jury was made up of Antonio Colinas, Amalia Iglesias, Alfredo Pérez Alencart, José María Muñoz Quirós, Maximiliano Fernández, and Luis Beltrán.

    The winner is an emeritus professor of Spanish literature and comparative literature at the University of Puerto Rico. She has written thirty books on comparative Spanish and Arabic literature, Aljamiado-Moorish literature and mysticism, and more than 300 articles.

    Among her books, translated into a dozen languages, are San Juan de la Cruz y el Islam, Huellas del Islam en la literatura española: de Juan Ruiz a Juan Goytisolo, La experiencia mística: tradición y actualidad, and Obra completa de San Juan de la Cruz, in collaboration with Eulogio Pacho.

    Lecturer and visiting professor at Yale, Harvard, Brown, Rabat, Buenos Aires… she has received numerous awards, such as the Order of Isabel la Católica, the Pedro Henríquez Ureña International Prize in Mexico, the Ibn’ Arabi Prize, and the Guggenheim and Fulbright Scholarships, as well as the PEN Club Literature Prize.

    The Teresa de Ávila Literature Prize, worth 10,000 euros, recognizes the career of a writer whose work, in its entirety or in its majority, is written in the Spanish language, regardless of the genre in which it has been developed. The award includes the publication of a work by the author in the Castillo Interior collection, published by the Consistory.
