How grocers are jockeying for position in an age of rapid change

The grocery industry is quickly evolving — and that state of flux was on clear display last week as representatives of retailers, technology vendors and other companies in the sector convened in Las Vegas for Groceryshop.

The annual conference explored top-of-mind topics such as how analytics are redefining how grocers serve shoppers and interact with suppliers, the challenges of building customer loyalty at a time when people have an unprecedented array of options for buying groceries, and how automation is changing seemingly every aspect of running a supermarket. On the show floor, vendors presented an array of tools aimed at helping retailers process information, improve efficiency and personalize the shopping experience for people.

Retailers also made news at the conference. Sam’s Club’s president and CEO announced that the company will soon open a location in Texas that accepts only its Scan & Go app for payment. Meanwhile, Lidl’s chief customer officer said the discount chain is preparing to relaunch its brand in the United States.
