On Thursday, October 17, 2024, at around 2:00 p.m., several Haitians arrested in an irregular migratory situation in Dominican territory, in an irregular migratory situation in Dominican territory demonstrated at the Haina Detention Center, demanding to be “immediately repatriated to their country of origin” in order to avoid mistreatment…
The General Directorate of Migration (DGM), reported that the situation was “controlled” quickly and security was reinforced on site by additional military and police personnel at the service of the institution, it was a preventive and dissuasive measure designed to prevent the situation from degenerating into a riot…
It assured that foreigners detained for repatriation will benefit from “treatment that respects their rights as human […] Both Dominicans and the governments of the countries of the region and international organizations that monitor migration issues can be sure that the DGM acts in respect of the rights of people…”
According to Immigration data, since On October 3rd, 2024, some 18,843 illegal Haitians were taken to the Haina Center after being arrested during migration checks.
In Haiti, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which provides assistance to the most vulnerable, estimates that up to 130,000 additional Haitians are expected by the end of the year, without access to food, shelter or care. IOM insists that the humanitarian response must be scaled up and more resources are needed to meet the growing needs.
