LIVE: South African President Meets China’s Xi Jinping; Demands Balanced Trade | Firstpost Africa

Beijing has rolled out the red carpet for leaders from across Africa for the China-Africa cooperation summit. Ahead of the Wednesday summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The South African leader urged Xi Jinping to narrow his country’s trade deficit with Beijing. He also asked Xi to review his country’s trade structure with China seeking more sustainable manufacturing and job-creating investments. This open request by Ramaphosa highlights a challenge for Xi Jinping as he hosts the African leaders for the next three days and tries to persuade them to buy more Chinese goods. African leaders are also likely to address the mounting Chinese debt during the upcoming summit.
