Can you play DVDs on a PS5? It’s something that many consumers and players are curious about. Some may be picking up the newest Sony console for the first time thinking about it. The console is very versatile in allowing players to use it for various means. From YouTube to Spotify, or even streaming on Netflix.

However, if you’re like me, you want to be able to kick back and watch a movie. Rather than stream something, popping a DVD into the console seems like the best choice. Furthermore, because many people still own them, getting the use out of DVDs would be great. Therefore, before you go out to buy a DVD player, we provide details on whether the PS5 can play DVDs and CDs.

Can the PS5 Play DVDs?

Yes, the PS5 console can play DVDs by inserting them into it. Upon doing so, it will automatically redirect the PS5 menu to the DVD-playing app on the system, select it. The process is simple and convenient, as you can watch any of your favorite movies through one device. Therefore, if you have any DVDs lying around, you are good to go in that regard. The following are all of the types of DVDs that work on the PS5:

  • DVD-R
  • DVD+R
  • DVD-RW
  • DVD-ROM

Moreover, the PS5 supports the playing of Blu-ray discs (mainly because this is what games are made on). However, movies and TV shows that are the same also work on the console. Because of this, it was guaranteed that DVDs work. When it comes to disk tech, the PS5 is very universal in compatible. However, if you have any of your classic music CDs, you may be curious as well.

Can the PS5 Play CDs?

Unfortunately, the PS5 cannot play CDs. The technology within the console does not support the reading of standard CDs. This has been present within Sony consoles since the PS4. However, the PlayStation 3 console was able to read them, times have changed. Additionally, likely, the usage of CDs in the console was only used by a small amount of the population. Therefore, rather than using resources to include the feature, it was taken out. This ranges from CD-ROMS to CD-R and CD-RW not being compatible with the PS5 console. It is also a feature that is not going to be coming back in the future. As these two recent generations have not included it, Sony seems to have moved on from it.

Now that you know the PS5 can play DVDs, it’s time to browse through your collection. Physical media is still popular, especially when it comes to movies and TV shows. Rather than trying to find something on a streaming service, pulling up a classic physical movie is always the best way to go. The PS5 gives players plenty to do, such as Game Sharing, and being able to use DVDs is just another benefit. You can bet I’ll be using mine to marathon the Fantasy Island show soon.
