Catherine Flon is celebrated as a symbol of Haitian independence for her pivotal role in sewing the first Haitian flag. During the Haitian Revolution in 1803, Flon was tasked with stitching together a flag after the revolutionary leader, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, tore apart the French tricolour.
