The transfer window may be closed, but there’s plenty of interesting action out there for Chelsea fans.

Fabrizio Romano is usually quiet at this time of year as he rests after a busy January, but today he’s dropped a Tweet that will be very interesting for Chelsea fans.

“Exclusive: Dean Huijsen’s contract at Bournemouth includes £50m release clause, ” Romano wrote on Twitter.

“The clause is 100% confirmed as revealed in January. It will be valid from summer 2025. 19 year old defender attracting top clubs interest after excellent performances at Bournemouth this season.”

Chelsea have been among the teams linked heavily with young Huijsen, who has been a key part of the Cherries’ incredible season so far.

£50m for a player with one season in the Premier League under his belt is crazy, of course, but it’s a testament to just how much of an impact the young Spain international has made that most people are saying he’s good value at that price.

Could Huijsen be Chelsea’s elite defender already?

Chelsea’s central defensive situation remains very unclear. Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile are injured so much that we can’t seem to ever rely on that. Axel Disasi and Renato Veiga have been loaned out. Trevoh Chalobah has been recalled, but it still seems likely that he’s sold permanently in the summer. Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo seem set to stay, but there are big doubts about their ability and their ceiling after a dodgy season at the back for Chelsea all round.

What we need is a really elite player, not another 19 year old. But those are hard to come by – and Huijsen might well have the potential to be that good very soon. If he keeps playing this well until the summer, we won’t be the only ones watching.
