In my last tutorial we learned about film emulation, and touched briefly on LUTs, or colour look-up tables. In this lesson we take a closer look at LUTs and how they are used in video post-production.
When a LUT is applied over your video footage, it shifts around the color information, similar to a color preset. However, LUTs provide better color accuracy and are more universal than a preset, allowing them to be imported in various programs, editors, camera and monitor displays.
Some of the more common uses of LUTs are for color correction, matching different camera profiles, film emulation, and cinema styling. It is important to note that when you are using LUTs for creative color grading, they should be used as a ‘starting out point’, which can then be fine tuned to achieve your desired look.
