Kenya has started discussions with the UAE to secure financing to complete a regional railway project that was left incomplete after China cut infrastructure funding. Kenya said it was exploring a partnership to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to connect Kenya with Uganda and South Sudan. The railway project in question was part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. However, its funding was cut due to debt repayment concerns. Ever since Ruto came to power, he has sought closer ties with the UAE, as Kenya looks to diversify its sources of financing. This comes as China-backed projects are facing hurdles in Africa.
