Arguably, one of the biggest games to come out of PlayStation’s line of studios in recent years that wasn’t a remake or remaster has got to be Astro Bot. With its charming rather than “cutting edge” graphics taking center stage. It seems former PlayStation exec, Shuhei Yoshida, is calling on Sony to reconsider its race to keep up with cutting edge graphics all the time.

Speaking with AVWatch (via Genki_JPN), Yoshida addresses that while it’s important to provide the high-end graphics for those who want it, offering not-so-cutting-edge graphics can help broaden the console’s appeal.

“Up until now, PlayStation’s DNA has been driven by values such as “cutting-edge graphics” that have continued since Kutaragi-san’s time. Users have also expected that from PlayStation games.

However, it’s about time we have to reconsider that.

Of course, I think it’s necessary to provide the very best (in terms of graphics quality) to those who want it. But, in order to continue to be popular with users in a broad sense, we naturally have to change our way of thinking.”

Astro Bot remains a strong game for Sony’s flagship console despite going for a more cartoony style with less of the typical cutting edge graphics that we come to expect from PlayStation. Moreover, the studio itself, Team Asobi, remains vigilant to not chasing the hyper-realistic trends that other PS studios have fallen into.

What do you think? Do you want PlayStation to build a more broad popularity even if it means toning down its race for cutting edge graphics? Let us know below!
