Welcome to the Wednesday Dogs of Dogster! Every month, we ask our Dogsters to weigh in on a new topic. This week, we asked them: What are your dog’s favorite sleeping spots? Here’s what they had to say:

Amanda & Subi

Sleeping is one of Subi’s favorite pastimes. Most of her day is spent in the cozy little dog bed beside mine, away from the noise and action. This might be the most predictable spot for her, but it’s certainly not the only one as of recently. Lately, I’ve spent more time in our living room, curtains open, basking in the daylight, watching the sun slowly win the battle against the mounds of Canadian snow in our front yard. Surprisingly, Subi has chosen to cuddle next to me, curled up perfectly atop a pillow. I’m unsure if it is her most cherished spot to sleep, but I enjoy it because it’s nice to see her break out of her lone-wolf rituals. I also like having her close enough to pet a few times throughout the day, which I know she enjoys, too, because she’ll roll onto her back for a few light belly rubs.

Kate & Gizmo

Gizmo’s unquestionable favorite sleeping spot, which I’m also convinced is his soulmate and favorite thing in the world, is our big yellow couch. He is constantly finding inventive new ways to take a snooze on this couch, including on the arms, buried in the back cushions, draped off the ottoman, and even wrapped up in blankets like a baby.

But as a true Velcro dog, he also requires companionship, so there are nap tier levels: from best to worst, we have on a person, touching a person, near a person, and as an absolute last resort, snuggled up with his doppelganger pillow.

Of course, napping can’t be limited to the living room, so ever-resourceful Gizmo also has comfort-seeking strategies for every other room. The basic premise is that there must be something soft underneath him at all times. Ideally several soft things, like a blanket on top of a pillow, an unexpectedly tiny banana bed (Temu, IYKYK) on top of a rug, or a teetering stack of dog beds. He’s not quite the Princess and the Pea, but he might be her dog…

Meagan, Draper & Rue

Oh my goodness, let me tell you about the adorable snooze-fest that is Draper and Rue! These two fluffy goofballs have turned napping into an Olympic sport, with a whopping 100 different sleeping spots and positions between them. Since they spend about 80% of their day catching Z’s (lucky little rascals!), picking just one favorite for them to brag about is like trying to choose the cutest puppy in a litter—impossible! But don’t worry, I won’t make you jealous by listing all 100 of their cozy hideouts (you’d need a nap just to recover from that!). Instead, I’ll spill the beans on their top 5 faves each.

Draper:

1. Tucked into my belly, baby spoon style
2. At our heads, on top of our pillows
3. In a pool of sunshine on the floor
4. Curled into a donut in his bed
5. On top of a fuzzy blanket

Rue:

1. On your lap
2. Under the covers at your feet
3. Corner of the bed in the sunshine
4. On top of Draper
5. On our back deck in the sunshine

Nicole, Mac & Rosa

Many people know cats as the characters who get bed after bed, bought for them only for them to lie on the box it came in or in the middle of the floor. Well, in our home, when it comes to sleeping positions and locations, our dogs are cats.

I think it stemmed from our cat, who passed away earlier this year. He was here first, and when Rosa joined the family, she looked to him for everything. He had a tiny cave bed, and she would try to fit inside it (it didn’t work; she’s a big dog, and he was a little cat). We got him a new donut bed, and Rosa would always try to steal it from him, so we ended up getting her one too. It was so tiny, but she never slept in her medium-sized dog bed, ever. She loves the bean bags, loved my pregnancy pillow, but a regular dog bed? No, thank you.

Then, when Mac joined the family, he looked to Rosa. We got him a nice big bed, and because she wouldn’t sleep on it, he thought, ‘Well, if it isn’t good enough for Rosa, it isn’t good enough for me. I’ll snuggle in nice and small and try to fit in the cat’s bed too.’ He also loves the outdoor couch, but thankfully, he has never tried to get on the indoor one. He’s too big to share with!

The dogs are happy lying on the grass, sometimes even on the gravel driveway, so it still boggles my mind that the expensive big woolen bed they have rarely gets used.

Rosa also loves to be in corners, whether on the floor or on the couch she’s not allowed on (but does it anyway when we’re not looking). I think it makes her feel protected and cozy. Mac, on the other hand, if he had his way, he’d have his head on the pillow on the bed next to me. Both dogs prefer being on our bed, but Rosa prefers it most when we aren’t on it with her.

They have their favorite spots, but they’re also pretty laid back when they have to get up and move to a new location, and they are always happy to try something new out, even if it doesn’t stick. At the end of the day, I think they would enjoy having our bed to themselves the most and having us in another room. Maybe a bedroom for our dogs is next on the list?
