Hello Everyone, thank you for tuning in! I am Victoria with Ms. Victorias Health and Wellness Forum! The holidays are here and guess what I am hearing! I can’t sleep V, what should I do? So many questions come to mind. The first is, do you have a sleep disorder?
The next several segments are going to be about…..guess? You guessed right Sleep disorders!
The first one we are going to talk about is Obstructive Sleep Apnea! also known as OSA~
OSA conceivably one of the most severe sleep disorders out there! Yep, even more than insomnia and sleepwalking. You know why? Because it is difficult to monitor, it causes you to stop breathing while you are sleeping. You stop and start sort of like the dryer when it’s on that cycle where it refreshes every ten minutes.
What occurs is that the muscles in the throat relax at irregular intervals; then, they block your airways while you are sleeping.
A visible and audible sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring. Loud Snoring! You are always sleepy during the day! You wake up because you feel like you are choking or suffocating. Your mouth is dry and wakes up with sore throats that usually wears off as the day goes by. Feel more irritable, depressed, anxious, and can not concentrate — headaches, high blood pressure, sweating through the night, and a decreased libido. Which a decreased libido should be an indicator to see a doctor, of course, along with the other symptoms.
There are many treatments available for sleep apnea and things we can do to ourselves! So let’s go over them quickly…
Breathing exercises are essential for many diseases. Dr. Michael Breus, claims that if a person starts a 30-minute, low-resistance breathing regimen, or performing 30 1 minutes inhalations exercises daily can help sufferers of sleep apnea strengthen while teaching their throat and breathing muscle to relax as needed. Not only do breathing exercises help with sleep apnea, but they also help promote restful sleep and lowers systolic blood pressure in the process.
Another option is to start doing yoga! Don’t tell me you to old, you have an injury, and it’s for yogi’s, there are many levels that you can participate in pending your age, level, injury. The idea behind it to also get muscles in your body working that you didn’t even know existed and improve your respiratory system as well as your oxygen flow!
Change the way you sleep, Meaning the position of your sleep! Try to use a pillow to support your neck and back, sleep on your left side (this is the most recommended position because it helps increase blood flow and does not restrain breathing). If you can’t sleep on your left, sleep on your right side, it helps promote air and blood flow, and can help reduce the loud snoring! Now, if you are not a side sleeper, sleep on your tummy! Help gravity pull the soft tissue forward; it will decrease snoring and the obstruction of your airways. Please try to avoid sleeping on your back! Its the worst position for someone who has sleep apnea! Your tongue and soft tissue will make it easier to obstruct those airways and cause you to snore and have difficulty breathing.
Sleep machines or gadgets are helpful too! Your physician can help you find what is best for you! Mouthpieces and breathing machines, you name it. They will be able to source it for you!
Use an essential oil diffuser! Five drops of each Eucalyptus, Spearmint, Thyme, and Lavender essential oil in the essential oil diffuser will help open nasal passages and promote restful sleep.
Herbs we feel comfortable and Passionflower and Valerian Root, these two herbs are known for aiding anxiety, insomnia, and other sleep disorders.
Now the ones that you are probably not going to like
Avoid consuming alcohol or smoking. You must be thinking I am killing your fun! But guess what, as many know alcohol can help you relax right. That same relaxation is what can obstruct your airways, versus smoking, which can cause inflammation of the airways, also blocking the airways. So there is no way around it! You need to avoid both.
As I have said in many of my segment’s weight control, weight loss is beneficial, and it will help broaden the nasal passages and help increase blood flow within the body. If enough weight is lost, it can reverse sleep apnea. Loss weight better sleep.
This is it for now! To be continued with more Sleep disorders!
