Hollam America is not among the largest cruise lines in the world, but it still has a very large number of ships carrying hundreds of thousands of people each year.
As of 2025, the line has 11 cruise ships, with capacities ranging from around 1,400 to about 2,600 passengers.
Below, you can find the updated ranking from the lowest-rated to the top-rated in terms of overall experience, based on a blend of expert evaluations and passenger reviews.
Factors include ship features, dining, service, itineraries, entertainment, and the general onboard atmosphere.
Before we move on with the rankings, it’s important to note that all HAL ships earn positive reviews; even the “worst” ship is still well-regarded (the spread between lowest and highest ratings is quite small).
11. MS Noordam
MS Noordam is the last of the Vista-class ships (2006), and it offers a mid-sized, classic cruising experience.
Guests love its balanced size: spacious enough for amenities yet still not too big, with crew known for their personalized, high-standard service.
The ship is consistently praised for cleanliness and a well-kept feel despite its age. On the downside, Noordam’s daytime atmosphere can be quiet with limited activities, and nighttime entertainment is more low-key, lacking the flashy productions found on larger cruise lines.
In addition, a few guests mentioned that some décor shows its age, but overall this ship delivers traditional Holland America comfort and warmth.
10. MS Westerdam

Westerdam debuted in 2004 and has been thoughtfully updated over the years.
Renovations added HAL’s popular Music Walk venues (like live blues and rock lounges), giving the ship a fresh energy in the evenings.
In general, Westerdam blends a cozy, classic ambiance with modern touches. Parts of its decor reflect traditional elegance, while upgrades keep it feeling clean and comfortable.
Passengers consistently commend the friendly, attentive service onboard. Dining quality is generally excellent, though a few reviews note inconsistent service speed in the restaurants.
As with many HAL ships, on Westerdam, daytime activities are calm and kids’ facilities are modest, so the ship caters more to adults seeking relaxation.
9. MS Nieuw Amsterdam

A sister ship to Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam is a slightly smaller Signature-class vessel launched in 2010 (but it’s important to say that it was extensively refurbished in 2017).
It offers many of HAL’s signature amenities: an elegant two-deck dining room, the specialty Tamarind restaurant for pan-Asian cuisine, and multiple live music venues (Billboard Onboard piano bar, Rolling Stone Lounge, etc.).
Reviews highlight the ship’s classy décor and spotless condition. As you might expect, it tends to attract a more mature crowd, so late-night action is limited, and the vibe is more refined than high-energy.
In addition, a few guests mentioned that popular areas (like the Lido buffet or pool) can get slightly crowded despite the mid-size ship space.
8. MS Oosterdam

Oosterdam is one of four Vista-class ships (named after compass directions, with “Oost” meaning East) launched in 2003.
Similar to the other ships in the class, it offers a blend of classical cruising charm and recent upgrades.
The ship features HAL’s Music Walk entertainment, including live blues, rock, and classical performances, which enliven the evenings.
By day, Oosterdam’s atmosphere is peaceful, activities are on the sober side, which some guests appreciate as a chance to unwind, though those craving fun might feel bored.
Thanks to refurbishments, many public spaces feel modern, but a few spots (such as parts of the pool area or older décor elements) can seem a bit dated.
7. MS Volendam

Volendam is HAL’s oldest active ship, launched in 1999.
As an R-class ship, it’s about 25–38% smaller than HAL’s newer ships, which creates a more intimate, cozy feel.
However, it lacks some of the venues found on larger ships. There are fewer entertainment options and not as many balcony cabins, and its layout is simple and easy to navigate.
What Volendam excels at is traditional cruising: guests report exceptional service from a crew that quickly gets to know you, a friendly atmosphere, and an emphasis on basic comforts.
Regulars know what to expect and come for the classic ambiance. The ship has been refurbished over time, but signs of age (like worn-in decor) are noticeable in some places.
This ship is perfect for cruisers who prioritize intimate atmosphere and interesting itineraries over onboard parties, and of course if you don’t mind a little vintage.

6. MS Zaandam

Zaandam is Volendam’s sister (R-class, launched 2000) and shares a similar small-ship, personable character.
It has a music-themed decor and even a collection of musical instruments on display, giving it a unique personality. Like Volendam, Zaandam has relatively few balcony cabins (so booking a cabin with a balcony could be considerably more expensive) and fewer onboard venues.
But the trade-off is a more cozy, intimate cruise with an uncrowded feel. Passengers tend to know what they’re signing up for and love the ship’s easy navigation and relaxed atmosphere.
The crew’s friendliness and attention to detail consistently earn praise. Several reviews described it as a “home away from home”.
Another very positive thing is that Zaandam’s small size means it often undertakes exotic itineraries (for example, lengthy Asia or South Pacific voyages), appealing to destination-focused cruisers.
On the flip side, entertainment and activities are limited. The evening shows and music are pleasant but not as elaborate as on bigger ships, and daytime entertainment is fairly minimal.
If you are looking for fun, maybe Holland America is not the best choice. In that case I suggest you take a look at the ranking of Carnival or Royal Caribbean ships.
5. MS Koningsdam

Koningsdam marked a new era for Holland America as the first Pinnacle-class ship (launched 2016, after a six-year gap in new builds).
Larger and more modern than its predecessors, it introduced stunning contemporary interiors that brought HAL’s style up-to-date, including a high-tech two-level main theater (the World Stage) and a chic design influenced by music motifs.
Thanks to its size Koningsdam has plenty of amenities: more dining choices (e.g. the French brasserie Rudi’s Sel de Mer and a farm-to-table venue), a full Music Walk with venues like B.B. King’s Blues Club (which her smaller sisters lack), and even solo traveler cabins.
Regular HAL guests appreciate that despite the ship’s size ( about 2,650 passengers), it still feels elegant and not overly crowded. However, some loyalists feel that the bigger Pinnacle ships “lost a little of the HAL magic” in terms of intimate charm.
With more passengers, service can occasionally feel less personalized (a few reviews mention crew stretched thin) , though overall service remains very good.
Well, despite being larger than the others, we are still a long way from the incredible numbers reached by the largest cruise ships in the world.
4. MS Zuiderdam

Zuiderdam was the first Vista-class ship (launched 2002) and has benefited from Holland America’s Signature of Excellence upgrades over the years.
It shares many traits with its Vista sisters (Oosterdam, Westerdam, Noordam): a mid-sized layout (about 1,900 guests) with wide teak decks and a wrap-around promenade, a sleek profile, and a mix of classic and contemporary decor.
The ship’s refurbishments have added modern touches, though some décor remains a bit dated. In particular, different reviews noted that the pool area shows its age.
In the evening, you can enjoy the dufferent musical venues like the Billboard Onboard piano bar and Lincoln Center Stage, plus a theater for production shows (the Music Walk offerings are a highlight).
Daytimes, however, are relaxed: you won’t find water slides or adrenaline parks, but you will find enrichment lectures, cooking demonstrations, and a well-stocked library. Of course, these are aspects that appeal to HAL’s traditionally mature audience.
Passengers describe the ship as unpretentious and comfortable. It’s a ship where you can truly relax and enjoy the journey, especially suited for cruisers who prefer a calm ambiance and engaging destinations over flashy onboard attractions.
3. MS Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the newest ship in the fleet and was launched in 2021.
As a Pinnacle-class vessel, she is the largest Holland America Line ship (about 100,000 tons) and brims with amenities.
A positive point is Rotterdam’s design, which can be considered sophisticated and artful. Different reviews underlined the ship’s extensive art collection and modern decor.
Unlike the smaller ships, this one has a more lively atmosphere. For example, during the day, you can enjoy a mix of traditional cruise activities (dance classes, fitness, games) and new additions (like BBC Earth experiences).
I can’t hide the fact that the Rotterdam had several problems, especially in the months immediately following its launch.
Some early reviewers pointed out slow service in dining rooms and a few inconsistencies in food quality or communication onboard.
As I’ve said several times in my reviews, these are typical startup kinks and usually improve as the crew gains experience with the ship.
Because of her bigger size, the service isn’t quite as personal as on the line’s smaller ships, but it’s still very friendly. Rotterdam maintains HAL’s signature hospitality and food quality.
To sum up, Rotterdam offers the most up-to-date Holland America experience, perfect for those who want a contemporary ship with lots to do while still enjoying the cruise line’s renowned cuisine, music, and polite service.
2. MS Eurodam

Eurodam is a fan-favorite and exemplifies everything Holland America does well.
It was launched in 2008 as the first Signature-class ship. It can carry about 2,100 guests and has been carefully refurbished to keep up with newer standards.
Eurodam offers a very good balance. Large enough to offer a variety of dining and entertainment, yet smaller than today’s mega-ships, so it rarely feels overly crowded.
In fact, many guests’ reviews remark that the ship feels “perfectly sized” and offers plenty to do without overwhelming you.
The onboard atmosphere is elegant but unpretentious, and the crew is known to go above and beyond, and many passengers report that staff make a special effort to make them feel at home.
Dining receives high marks as well, from the quality of the complimentary meals to the specialty options.
Entertainment is also well-reviewed. The ship offers everything from classical concerts to blues and rock, plus decent production shows.
The main negatives are minor: a couple of venues can get busy at peak times (especially the Lido Marketplace buffet and the popular spa), and the decor isn’t as ultra-modern as the Pinnacle class.
Overall, Eurodam is “a great ship for those who like their cruises elegant but affordable” as a passenger said.
1. MS Nieuw Statendam

We are finally at the top of the list with Nieuw Statendam, a Pinnacle-class ship launched in 2018.
As the second-newest ship, it incorporates Holland America’s latest design elements while retaining the line’s beloved traditions.
Nieuw Statendam is often praised for its beauty. From the stunning artwork and modern architecture onboard to the spacious, well-appointed cabins. It can host about 2,600 passengers, so it’s large but still not overly large
A specific feature of this ship is the focus on music: Nieuw Statendam is truly a haven for music-lovers, featuring an array of venues showcasing rock, blues, chamber music, and more. Even guests who normally skip ship entertainment often find themselves enjoying the live bands each night.
The food and service onboard earned high praise. Many reviewers highlight the consistently excellent dining (from the main dining room to the poolside grill) and the friendly, polished crew.
As you can tell from its ranking, in aggregate passenger reviews, Nieuw Statendam edges out others as the top-rated Holland America ship overall.
Minor critiques mainly focus on the style of the cruise. Passengers who are used to other cruise lines may feel that the daily entertainment and activities can feel a bit tame or quiet, especially if compared to flashier competitors like Royal or Carnival.
For example, you won’t find big parties, but you will still find some interesting theme nights. But most see this as a positive, appreciating the upscale, relaxed vibe.
Obviously, book your cruise with awareness. If you don’t wanna focus on a specific cruise line, you can also decide from the list of the 10 Best Cruise Ships in the World.
