Sure, 9-1-1: Lone Star is about a fire family, but what’s a family without a little healthy competition?

And there is no duo more competitive than besties Paul and Marjan, which is why things are heating up and getting messy in the battle for lieutenant.

Ahead of a highly-anticipated season premiere, TV Fanatic was fortunate enough to score an exclusive sneak peek featuring none other than this hilarious duo, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Judd’s Lieutenant Position is Up for Grabs in 9-1-1: Lone Star’s Premiere

Much to our displeasure, Judd retired early during the season finale.

Judd resigned as lieutenant to take care of his son. It’s noble!

Judd is nothing if not a family man, so of course, he’d do whatever it took to look after Wyatt, even if it meant stepping back from a job he loved with his fire family.

But that has also left the 126 in the lurch and in dire need of a lieutenant, which means some of their finest will be vying for the position.

While many will likely seek the position, it only makes sense that someone we know and love will get to take over.

Who better to run such a close-knit team, work closely with Owen, and keep up the general spirit, camaraderie, and family feeling of the 126 other than someone who has been part of it all this time?

Sibling Rivalry; A House Divided?

When the synopsis stated that Paul and Marjan would be competing against one another for the position, a concern is that this would drive a wedge between them and maybe lead to a house divided.

But Paul and Marjan have endured far worse together, and fortunately, their relationship reads as a bit of friendly rivalry — sibling rivalry, if you will.

The truth is that there’s a case for Paul or Marjan to take up the position.

Marjan is fearless and one of the first to run into danger.

She understands every aspect of firefighting, has the respect of all of those around her, and works incredibly well with others.

Paul is also an excellent candidate for the position.

He’s got a knack for paying attention to details, which always makes him an asset.

He’s also typically one of the coolest, calmest, and even-tempered characters under pressure.

Paul is taking a beat as they arrive at a call.

He has the drive to succeed and the compassion to lead a team as he’s been led, and he, too, has the respect of his peers.

Truthfully, Owen can’t go wrong with choosing who will be his next lieutenant here, which is what will likely make the battle between them so fun.

Let the Competitive Shenanigans Begin in Our Sneak Peek!

And it’s definitely a fun competition if our exclusive sneak peek is any indication.

The race to lieutenant is neck and neck, and both Marjan and Paul are jumping at any and every opportunity to prove to Owen why they’re the best at the job.

Tommy notices this, and she can’t help but warn Owen to make his decision sooner rather than later before Paul and Marjan destroy each other.

Owen is still reeling from his losses in the season premiere.
(Kevin Estrada/FOX)

Their competitive spirit amuses Tommy, but Owen remains undecided, even though Paul and Marjan are doing the absolute most on-call scenes!

We’re treated to a montage of their competitive antics, including Firefox diving into a moving vehicle to prevent the passed-out driver from getting carbon monoxide poisoning and stopping the truck from doing donuts.

Mateo is in awe of that maneuver, reminding them all that Marjan is Firefox, after all.

Paul hilariously comments about Marjan as Lara Croft (which would be BADASS, by the way; someone needs to get on that)!

But not to be outdone, Paul shines, too, including a positively hilarious moment that includes him dropping full-bodied into a vat of grease.

Paul and Marjan are at the scene of a call and compete with each other.

What he has to retrieve only makes it funnier.

But perhaps he’ll decide after their bickering results in an eye-opening and jacket-soaking moment for Owen.
