Each era is marked by its icons, just as every renowned fashion house is distinguished by its signature style. For Louis Vuitton, the introduction of the new fine jewellery collection, Le Damier de Louis Vuitton, promises a new dawn for the maison and its Damier motif as its namesake suggests. The Damier, brainchild of father-son duo Louis and Georges Vuitton, began in 1888 as a symbol of originality and authenticity. Even after 136 years since the motif’s introduction, the messaging of the Damier remains unchanged, and is a testament to its timelessness.

The 12-piece yellow or white gold collection, dreamt up by Francesca Amfitheatrof, Artistic Director for Watches and Jewellery, references the maison’s inimitable motif as a singular source of inspiration. Instead of animating the Damier’s duo-toned pattern, Amfitheatrof reinterprets it by alternating blank squares with diamond-encrusted ones. While the pattern turns out more abstract than apparent, it speaks forth the sophistication, modernity and fluidity of the collection, enamouring itself to both genders and wearers of various generations. “It’s a diamond collection that’s not just about the stones but the pattern that they create. Le Damier de Louis Vuitton embodies what modern jewellery is all about,” says Amfitheatrof.

Instead of presenting the Le Damier de Louis Vuitton with a curved or flat surface, Amfitheatrof marries sharpness with fluidity with a central line splitting the jewellery’s two- or four-row angled construction. Anchoring the collection is the Le Damier de Louis Vuitton ring, presented in three widths for various occasions. The elegant two-row ring suits everyday wear, while the chunkier two-row or highly graphic four-row double ring are options if one wishes to make a statement.

Conversely, the Le Damier de Louis Vuitton bracelet is a riff on the classic tennis bracelet, so named after an infamous 1978 US Open game had to be halted after a player’s diamond bracelet went missing; play only resumed after it was safely retrieved. Similar to the ring, the bracelet is available in a slim or large two-row construction. Since the original Damier motif epitomises originality and authenticity, the rings and bracelets can be stacked and layered according to one’s freedom. Other pieces in the collection include the earrings and necklace in yellow gold, and will be available at Louis Vuitton boutiques from 18 October 2024 onwards.
