I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but one of the things that I really like about cruises is that most things are already included in the ticket price.

You could basically leave with no money and still be able to have a great vacation.

However, if you really wanna enjoy it to the fullest the reality is a little different. As with all things, there are “extras” that will require additional money.

But what are the things that are never included in the cruise price that you should budget extra for? Let’s find out the most important ones.

1. Specialty Dining

The main dining room and buffet are free on every cruise ship, but specialty dining venues usually come with extra fees.

These premium restaurants could serve elevated cuisine like sushi, steak, or teppanyaki, with charges typically ranging from $30 to over $100 per meal, depending on the venue and cruise line.

Are they worth it? In my experience in most cases, they are not.
Cruise ships already offer so many different food options for free and they are usually already very good.

They might be a good option for a special occasion or if you really want to try something from their menu.

2. Shore Excursions

One of the most exciting parts of cruising is visiting various ports, but remember that excursions aren’t included in the fare.

Activities can vary widely in price—from $40 for a basic tour to hundreds of dollars for unique experiences or private guides.

As I said in the article on the cruise money-wasting mistakes not every port needs an organized shore excursion. Some ports can be visited independently, on foot, or by using public transportation.

3. Internet and Wi-Fi

Internet access on cruise ships often comes at a premium, with some lines offering daily or weekly packages.

Until a few years ago, the connection was also quite slow and unstable, but on newer ships, some systems (like Starlink) allow high-speed internet even in the middle of the ocean.

Should you spend money on the Internet package? It depends, sometimes on vacation it is best to completely disconnect and take a break from the digital world. However, if you need the connection for work or to stay in touch with family then you could definitely consider it.

4. Fitness Classes

The gym is among the 10 free things you must take advantage of on cruises, but classes like yoga, spinning, and pilates often have an extra fee (usually between $15–$20 each).

Some lines offer passes for unlimited classes, while others offer complimentary options during port days. I’ve taken part in a few of them over the years and have always enjoyed them and found very prepared trainers.

5. Alcoholic and Specialty Beverages

Now let’s talk about one of the most controversial topics: drinks.

The first thing I want to say is that not all drinks on a cruise come with a charge. If you’re not really sure have a look at the list of drinks that are always free on cruise ships.

However, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, cocktails, and soft drinks will cost extra. Many lines offer drink packages, but they can be pricey and may not cover all drinks, such as high-end wines or specialty cocktails.

If you’re considering one, remember to watch out for these drink package mistakes.

6. Spa and Salon Treatments

If you are on vacation and want to take care of yourself, the spa on a cruise is definitely the place to go.

However, from what I’ve seen, spa services, from massages to facials, can be much pricier than on land.

Look out for deals on port days when services are often discounted and try to follow these 20 tips and tricks to save money on a cruise.

7. Exclusive Areas and Experiences

Some ships (especially the bigger ones) may have exclusive areas, such as adults-only lounges, cabanas, or premium pools, which cost extra.

These spots often include added perks, like dedicated service or complimentary drinks, but reserving a space here can add significantly to your expenses.

Admission is usually free for passengers traveling in suites, along with a range of other benefits.

8. Gratuities

If you have been on a cruise before, you should be familiar with this, but I understand that it can be confusing among newbies.

Basically, most cruise lines automatically add a daily gratuity fee per person, per day, to your onboard account.

You can prepay these fees before the cruise or settle them at the end. The important thing to know is that they are compulsory and can be removed only in rare cases as I explained in this article.

9. Room Service Fees

While some ships still offer free room service, many now charge a delivery fee or only offer free options during limited hours.

Hot meals delivered to your cabin may come with à la carte pricing, so it’s wise to check your line’s policy.

Again, some people may have free room service especially if you travel in suites, in higher category cabins, or you’re a member of the loyalty program.

Before ordering check these things in the terms and conditions of your booking or ask a member of staff.

10. Entertainment Add-Ons

A lot of basic activities are free on cruise ships such as shows, trivia games, themed parties, and water slides.

However, certain experiences like escape rooms, virtual reality games, 4D films, arcade games, and exclusive performances often require additional fees.

Planning for these costs will help avoid surprises and let you enjoy more of what cruising has to offer without financial stress.
