The ANC lost its outright electoral majority in South Africa for the first time since the dawn of democracy, in last year’s general elections. At the heart of the ANC’s electoral decline was the party’s former President Jacob Zuma, who endorsed the newly formed MK Party. The loss of electoral support in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, contributed a great deal to the ANC getting only 40% of the votes dipping below fifty percent, and politically obliterated in KZN by the MK Party. The January 8 Statement birthday celebrations of the ANC will take place in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape where the party will seeks to reconnect with the electorate at a time when it no longer governs the country alone.
