In a time when there is so much uncertainty, negativity, and horror in the world, the uplifting stories of survival and kindness are most needed. Some of the most inspirational tales we’ve seen recently are about a very special group known as The Unstoppable Dogs. Taking on a special needs dog is a huge commitment that few people have the time, dedication, or patience to make. For Debbie Pearl of Huntington Beach, California, it is a commitment she has made over and over again.
Debbie’s work training dogs for film and television inspired her to start Dream Fetchers, a non-profit organization that specialized in animal-assisted therapy for hospitals, schools, and other settings. It was through her work there that she met Eddie, a terrier with spinal trauma resulting in hind limb paralysis. Inspired by his spirit and resilience, Debbie was determined to help other dogs in need of rehabilitation and support, leading her to create The Unstoppable Dogs.
The Unstoppable Dogs
As you watch the stories of these dogs unfold, it would take some superhuman stoicism not to feel a tug at the heartstrings. The cruelty and trauma suffered by some of these creatures is unimaginable, so to see them learn to trust again and to witness the joy as they regain their mobility and confidence is truly something else.
Some of the most heartbreaking stories surround several dogs that experienced horrific mutilation, with the brutal amputation of their paws. These dogs have experienced the very worst of human treatment, but with Debbie’s help, they have been given the chance at a new, much happier life.
Dogs like Zoe, Elliot, Zeek, and Zahara – whose journey from Cairo, Egypt to California has been made into a short film, “Unconditional: Zahara’s Story,” which will be making its debut at the Pasadena International Film Festival on April 3rd (tickets available through the website).
Zahara’s Story
When Zahara was found on the streets of Cairo, she was in a terrible state, and the ends of all four legs had been cruelly cut off. After being rescued by the Animal Protection Foundation in Egypt, her wounds were treated, and she was soon managing to get around on her bandaged stumps, showing her carers that she was determined to not just live, but trust again. Knowing that her best chance for a good recovery was in the US, Zahara’s rescuers got in touch with Debbie, and a plan was made to transport her to California, where she would be fitted with prosthetics.
It’s impossible to predict how well a dog will respond to this sort of equipment, but several of the Unstoppable Dogs were already living active lives with their replacement limbs, so they knew they had to try. In the end, they got to see her stumble, wobble like a lamb, and then take confident steps with a wagging tail.
The Unstoppable Ranch
Next up for Debbie and the Unstoppable Dogs is the creation of The Unstoppable Ranch. The mission is to create a sanctuary in Surf City, Huntington Beach, for special needs dogs with indomitable spirits. Somewhere for dogs like Speedy, Elliot, Zoe, Eddie, and Zeek to heal and recover. Where they can be rehabilitated and, if possible, rehomed. But this project needs the support of animal lovers like you.
