With US President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal” trade tariffs taking effect on Wednesday, April 9, the global markets are down again. While markets had attempted recovery on Tuesday, a day after ‘Black Monday’ stocks crash, markets plunged everywhere around the world on Wednesday. Besides, Trump has now vowed to also impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals, which were earlier excluded from his ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs plan. In such, several countries are rushing to secure a trade deal with the US. Meanwhile, Trump has also not ruled out the possibility of such deals, with the White House maintaining that they are ready to negotiate trade packages “tailored” for different countries. China, however, has hit back at Trump’s 54% tariff, and hit the US with a “reciprocal” tariff of 84%. Trump increased the tariffs on China to 104%, which could further destabilise the global economies. So, will the US-China trade war further escalate, or will the two nations roll back their retaliatory tariffs? And are the global economies headed for recession?
