Manchester United take on Lyon on Thursday night in what will be the most important game of the season so far. Out of all competitions and in the wilderness in the Premier League, United are relying on success in the Europa League to save the season.

Ahead of the game, United goalkeeper Andre Onana arrogantly claimed that his team were “way better” than their opponents.

We all know the importance of this game, we will go there with the winning mentality. We have to go there and show who we are. If we are focused, stay compact and together and follow the gameplan we will be winning the game. Of course it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them.

Unsurprisingly, this comment didn’t go down too well with Nemanja Matic, the current Lyon midfielder, but who made more appearances for United than any other club. When asked about Onana’s comment, Matic got personal.

If you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history then you need to take care of what you are talking about. If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar said that I would question myself but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history, he needs to show that before he says it.

It didn’t take long for Onana to hit back via social media, referring to the five trophyless seasons Matic spent at United, while posting a picture of himself with the FA Cup he won after beating Manchester City last May.

I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.
