Eddie Howe insisted he is enjoying the selection headache his Newcastle players have presented him after coming from behind against Wolves last time out.
Two goals in five minutes from Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes moved the Magpies up to third in the early-season standings as they aim to return to the Champions League this season.
With Newcastle struggling with injuries for much of last season, Howe said that despite the difficulty of the decisions he has to make every week, it is part of being a head coach in the Premier League.
“Those are the headaches you want. Leaving Harvey out and other players in this game was very, very difficult but it what you’re paid to do,” Howe said.
“All you want then is when the player enters the pitch to try and prove that he should try and start the next game.
“The fixture list is never easy, every game in the Premier League is always difficult. Four points from Wolves and Bournemouth is good and we go away to Fulham next.”
Fulham, meanwhile, suffered a shock midweek exit in the Carabao Cup to Championship side Preston North End at Deepdale.
The Cottagers were beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time, eventually being dumped out of the competition in unusual fashion, losing 16-15 after Timothy Castagne saw his penalty saved, with Ryan Ledson sending North End through.
Head coach Marco Silva was left ruing his sides missed opportunities during the encounter, and is hoping his players can find their clinical edge against the high-flying Magpies this weekend.
“I’m sure that we did enough during the 95 minutes to win the game,” Silva told reporters after the 34-kick shootout.
“From the first minute, we took control of the game and I think we created enough chances… the crossbar, a lot of crosses, a lot of moments where we should’ve scored.”
Smith Rowe has made a positive start to his Fulham career, netting his second goal involvement since his move from Arsenal with his assist for Raul Jiminez’s goal against West Ham.
The 24-year-old also boasts an impressive record against the Magpies, winning four of the five games he has played against them (L1), scoring once.
Newcastle – Harvey Barnes
Barnes has either scored (two) or assisted (one) a goal in each of his last three Premier League appearances for Newcastle.
Only in January 2021 at Leicester has he registered a goal involvement in four consecutive games in the competition before.
MATCH PREDICTION: DRAW
Newcastle have enjoyed their recent visits to Craven Cottage, winning each of their last four away league games against Fulham, having previously lost six in a row before this.
The Magpies also boast an expected goals (xG) against total of 6.5 in the Premier League this season, but have conceded just three goals, with their difference of 3.5 between goals conceded and xG against the best in the division so far.
With 10 points (W3 D1), this is Newcastle’s best start to a Premier League campaign after four games since 1995-96 under Kevin Keegan (12 points) – the Magpies haven’t gone unbeaten in their opening five top-flight matches since 2011-12 under Alan Pardew (W2 D3).
Fulham, meanwhile, are winless in their last eight Premier League meetings with Newcastle (D2 L6), losing each of the last five in a row.
Silva’s side have also struggled on home soil, having won just one of their last six Premier League home games (D2 L3), having won four of their previous six at Craven Cottage (D1 L1).
While Opta’s data-led simulations expected a draw between the two sides, none of Fulham’s 16 Premier League home games against Newcastle have finished level, with the Cottagers winning nine and losing seven. The only exact fixture to be played more without being drawn in the competition’s history is Everton v Fulham at Goodison Park (17).
Drawing on a record global supply of atmospheric moisture – and with a jet stream “stuck” in a mode identified in climate change research – a series of catastrophic floods has been slamming far-flung parts of the Northern Hemisphere in September.
Flooding from persistent, unusually heavy rains across northwest and north-central Africa has taken more than 1,000 lives and driven close to 1 million from their homes.
Storm Boris, a stalled upper low, has triggered days of intense rainfall, caused billions in damage, and forced tens of thousands to evacuate flooded cities across Central Europe.
Typhoon Yagi, which struck the Philippines and northern Vietnam and then hauled moisture across the highlands of Southeast Asia, spawned floods and mudslides that have taken more than 500 lives and cost over $13 billion.
One link among all of these systems: Warmer global temperatures allow more water to evaporate from oceans and intensify rainfall, even as they also suck moisture from parched landscapes where it’s not raining (the “wet get wetter, dry get drier” paradox). As measured via precipitable water – the amount of water vapor in an imaginary column over a given point – August 2024 was the wettest August on record globally and the 14th consecutive wettest month on record in analyses dating back to 1940.
Jet-stream weirdness is another factor in play in the Northern Hemisphere. The usual belt of tropical rainfall has been displaced much farther north than usual in Africa, which has moistened parts of the arid Sahara Desert and brought torrents of rain to the semiarid Sahel belt (and perhaps also helped suppress hurricanes across the Main Development Region of the Atlantic).

At midlatitudes — the region of the globe that includes much of North America, Europe, and Asia — blocking patterns and cut-off upper lows have been prevalent in recent days, including Storm Boris and the slow-moving Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, which dumped more than 20 inches of rain on parts of the North Carolina coast. Research extending back more than a decade has pointed to a phenomenon called quasi-resonant amplification, or QRA, as an important factor in prolonged summer weather extremes across the Northern Hemisphere. Such events could become up to 50% more common this century as climate change unfolds, according to a key 2018 paper.
Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University and lead author of that paper, is now working to analyze how much the phenomenon may be involved in the recent Northern Hemisphere extremes. This work will take a few more days to finalize, Mann said in a direct message. He added: “What I can say is that this does look like a potential QRA pattern, consistent with our work suggesting that anthropogenic climate change is leading to an increase incidence of such setups.”

Flooding in West and Central Africa
Torrential rains during July, August, and September have unleashed catastrophic floods in West and Central Africa, affecting over 4 million people in 14 countries: Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Togo. According to the U.N. World Food Program, the floods have exacerbated aregional hunger crisis that was already affecting 55 million people – four times more people than five years ago. At least 1,096 people have been killed in five of the countries, according to a variety of sources:
Chad: 487 killed, 70,000 homes destroyed, 1.6 million affected Nigeria: 269 killed, 640,000 displaced Niger: 265 killed, 69,000 homes destroyed, 649,000 affected Mali: 55 killed, 344,000 affected, worst floods since the 1960s Cameroon: 20 killed
Climate change is increasing the severity of deadly African weather disasters
Despite recent improved weather forecasting technology and increased disaster awareness and preparation efforts, the African continent has suffered an unprecedented number of deadly weather-related disasters over the past two years. This year’s floods are the eighth weather-related disaster to kill at least 500 Africans since 2022; an astonishing 27% of the continent’s 30 deadliest weather-related disasters since 1900 have occurred since 2022 (Fig. 2).
This ominous figure could well be a harbinger of the future, as higher vulnerability, a growing population, and more extreme weather events from climate change cause an increase in deadly disasters. Typhoon Yagi
Typhoon Yagi made landfall on September 7 near Hai Phong, Vietnam, as a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds and a central pressure of 933 mb, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Yagi was the first Category 4 or stronger typhoon to make landfall in Vietnam since modern records began in 1945. Prior to Yagi, Vietnam had been hit by only six Category 3 typhoons, the strongest of these being Typhoon Lola of 1993 (120 mph winds).

The economic and human toll of Yagi has been staggering. The typhoon killed 291 people in Vietnam, with 38 missing, as reported by Reuters. Most of the toll was from torrential rains in the northern portion of the country. At least 226 people have died in floods and landslides across Myanmar, according to AP, with 77 others missing and the economic toll still undetermined.
Vietnam has had three tropical cyclones that have killed over 1,000 people: Typhoon Iris of 1964 (7,000 deaths), Typhoon Linda of 1997 (3,683 deaths), and Tropical Storm 16W of 1953 (1,000 deaths).
According to the Vietnamese government, Yagi has cost Vietnam at least $2 billion, which would make it the nation’s costliest storm on record. According to EM-DAT, Vietnam has had five prior billion-dollar weather disasters (shown below along with Yagi in 2024 dollars):

Also hard-hit by Yagi was far southern China’s Hainan province, where four deaths have been reported and damage has exceeded $11 billion, according to regional authorities. According to EM-DAT, this would make Yagi the third-costliest Chinese typhoon on record (in 2023 dollars adjusted for inflation). The top six most expensive Chinese tropical cyclones:

(This list leaves out what was possibly the most destructive Chinese typhoon of all time, Typhoon Nina of 1975. Nina stalled out and dumped prodigious rains for two days in the Ru River drainage basin upstream of the Banqiao Dam, leading to the dam’s collapse and the loss of 171,000 lives, with an area 34 miles long and eight miles wide wiped out. The disaster was not disclosed by China until the mid-1990s.)

Storm Boris in Europe
An unusually strong, cold upper low dove into southern Europe late last week, triggering the formation of a strong surface low over the Mediterranean Sea south of Genoa, Italy. This Genoa low evolved into Storm Boris and wrapped warm, moist air northward beneath the cold upper low across Central Europe while also forcing moisture southward and upslope against the Austrian Alps. Storm Boris drew some of its water vapor from a Mediterranean that hit its highest daily average surface temperature on record on August 15 (28.9 Celsius or 84°F).

The resulting temperature contrasts and strong instability led to intense showers and thunderstorms that dumped torrential rain and spawned widespread flooding across parts of Poland, Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovakia. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated and at least 21 killed. Some locations received five typical Septembers’ worth of rain in four days, as reported by The Guardian.

Although the rains from Boris had largely subsided by midweek, floodwaters were coursing down the Danube River toward Hungary and Slovenia and along the Oder River toward Wroclaw, Poland.
“These floods are a clear reminder of the growing threat of climate-induced extreme weather events,” Sissi Knispel de Acosta, the general secretary of the European Climate Research Alliance, told the New York Times. The World Weather Attribution group will release an analysis on Wednesday, September 25, on their research showing to what degree climate change may have affected the storm.
At higher elevations of the Austrian Alps, the cold upper low teamed up with moisture from Boris and upslope flow to produce an exceptionally early round of heavy snow. The snow piled up to 145 cm (4.76 feet) at Alpinzentrum Rudolsshutte (elevation 700 meters or 2,300 feet), a record-high total for Austria for any September event. Fraser Wilkin of weathertoski.co.uk told Planet Ski: “Although occasional (mostly) high-altitude snowfalls are nothing unusual in September, this degree of storm is not something we have seen this early for many years.”

Watching the Western Caribbean for the Atlantic’s next named storm
The National Hurricane Center is highlighting the Western Caribbean as the potential genesis location for the Atlantic’s next named storm, which might get spun off from a large low-pressure system known as a Central American Gyre. The gyre — a type of monsoon low — is a weak but expansive area of surface low pressure that can persist for two weeks or more across Central America and adjacent parts of the Atlantic and Pacific, including the western Caribbean and southwest Gulf of Mexico. They are most common in May, June, September, October, and November. The gyres often spin off smaller circulations that can become full-fledged tropical cyclones. One such circulation formed in June in the Gulf of Mexico and became the season’s first named storm, Alberto.
In its 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday Tropical Weather Outlook, the National Hurricane Center gave two-day and seven-day odds of tropical cyclone development in the Western Caribbean of 0% and 20%, respectively. Not all eligible borrowers will be afforded the opportunity to refinance their mortgages as rates decline, a blog from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau claims.
Slightly less than one quarter of current mortgage borrowers have a loan at an interest rate at 5% or higher, the group most likely to benefit from a refinancing. That includes the 14% share whose rate is over 6%.
Nearly 60% of these loans were originated in the last two years. However, based on historic patterns, the CFPB post said, minority borrowers do not have that opportunity to reduce their mortgage rate.
The three largest cohorts of existing borrowers were in the under-5% buckets with 35% between 3% and 4%; 22% with a rate lower than 3%; and 19% between 4% and 5%.
The share of refinance rate locks was just under 30% on Sept. 16, according to product and pricing engine technology company Optimal Blue.
For the month of August, refis had a 26% share, with the rate-and-term variety reporting a 109% month-to-month and a 300% year-over-year improvement in volume, Optimal Blue said.
“Even as interest rates fell to historic lows in 2020 and 2021, about 3.7 million mortgages (7.4%) still had interest rates of at least 6% and another 3.5 million (7%) had interest rates of at least 5%,” the CFPB Office of Mortgage Markets wrote. “Researchers at the Atlanta Fed found that Black and Hispanic borrowers were less likely to refinance than other borrowers, even after controlling for factors like credit scores, home equity, and income.”
The CFPB also cited a Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. study that claimed “suggestive evidence” indicated that marginal borrowers are crowded out from supply constrained markets before they can apply for a refi. The lenders instead targeted borrowers with high loan balances, high incomes, and high credit scores, the FDIC declared.
An April 2021 Freddie Mac blog that was not cited by the CFPB pointed out “geographically, the counties hit hardest by the pandemic also saw some of the largest refinancing income gaps. And in terms of health and economic implications, the pandemic continues to impact communities of color disproportionately, leaving them less likely to refinance.”
It was exacerbated by factors like income and employment shocks, their access to financial education and the differences in information networks where they could get information about refinancing.
A research note Freddie Mac issued the following month that cites the Atlanta Fed research pointed out that closing costs associated with a refinance of what was then nearly $5,000 could be an issue for those that lack the liquid assets.
Among the options that they might not be taking advantage of was doing a no-closing cost loan (the rate is higher but the borrower still saves money) and shopping a number of lenders for rate, the May 2021 post said.
In its new post, the CFPB noted refinancing gives consumers’ money to spend on other things, which could benefit the economy.
For millions of borrowers, the opportunity to refinance would create significant savings and potentially improve financial stability.
“The CFPB will continue to monitor and report on refinancing activity and industry practices that encourage or discourage borrowers seeking to refinance. The CFPB is also exploring ways to streamline the refinancing process and reduce closing costs,” the post said.
The mortgage analysts at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods expect refinance volume to continue increasing, especially in the Federal Housing Administration and Veterans Affairs markets where the process is easier. FHA loans have lower down payment and credit score requirements than conforming mortgages. The VA program allows for eligible borrowers to receive 100% financing.
Both programs have lower average rates than the conforming product. Optimal Blue had the 30-year conforming at 6.038% as of Sept. 16, while FHA was 5.929% and the VA product had the lowest rate of all at 5.455%.
Citing the most recent Mortgage Bankers Association report, FHA refi activity was up 44% sequentially quarter to date, said Bose George of KBW. Meanwhile VA refis increased 105%, compared with 38% for the market as a whole.
KBW’s models call for $609 billion of refinance next year, a 51% increase from the “low base of $402 billion we are currently forecasting for 2024,” George said.
“We would note that the majority of the mortgage universe remains [275 basis points to 300 basis points] out of the money to refinance, and the bulk of 2024 year-to-date refinance activity reflects cash-out debt consolidation loans,” he continued, adding KBW forecasts $649 billion of refi volume in 2026.

The trial into an army veteran’s silent prayer near an abortion clinic has begun at Poole Magistrates’ Court.
Adam Smith-Connor was issued with a fixed penalty notice on 13 December 2022 after allegedly being in breach of an abortion clinic “buffer zone” in Bournemouth the previous month.
He told officers he had been “praying for his deceased son” who was aborted by an ex-girlfriend, a decision he now regrets.
Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council filed charges against Smith-Connor for praying within the boundaries of the buffer zone. The buffer zone bans a number of pro-life activities including prayer and offers of help to women experiencing crisis pregnancies.
The three-day trial is due to conclude on Thursday.
Speaking ahead of the hearing, Smith-Connor said that opinions or beliefs held in people’s minds should not be a crime.
“Nobody should be prosecuted for silent prayer. It is unfathomable that in an apparently free society, I am being criminally charged on the basis of my silent thoughts, in the privacy of my own mind. It’s not different than being tried for a thoughtcrime,” he said.
“I served for 20 years in the army reserves, including a tour in Afghanistan, to protect the fundamental freedoms that this country is built upon. I continue that spirit of service as a health care professional and church volunteer. It troubles me greatly to see our freedoms eroded to the extent that thoughtcrimes are now being prosecuted in the UK.”
Smith-Connor is being supported by the Alliance Defending Freedom UK (ADF UK), which said the case revealed confusion among Britain’s police officers about where the law stands on silent prayer.
Jeremiah Igunnubole, legal counsel for ADF UK, said, “In various other circumstances, the police and the courts have made it clear that silent prayer is not a criminal act. And yet, BCP Council, which has already conceded that presence is not in itself an offence, has introduced a rights-restricting censorship zone, which they now argue extends to a ban on silent prayer.
“In permitting the prosecution of silent prayer, we are sailing into dangerous waters regarding human rights protections in the UK. Censorship zones are inherently wrong and engender unhelpful legal confusion regarding the right to free thought. Both domestic and international law have long established freedom of thought as an absolute right that must not ever be interfered with by the state.
“The Telegraph recently reported that Ministers are considering naming ‘silent prayer’ as a crime in their ‘buffer zones’ guidance – to do so would not only be a legal error, it could open up the floodgates to human rights violations similar to those experienced by Adam Smith-Connor.”
