Short and Sweet Cleaning Steps

One item I work hard on in the gun world is firearm maintenance. Yes, I know that most modern firearms are polymer-centric, yet they also need ongoing care. With that being said, let’s look at a short and sweet guide on how to clean your shotgun.

Safety First

Before we do any cleaning, we need to talk about safety. The shotgun must be unloaded, and all ammo must be stored separately. I encourage you to remove any ammo you have stored on the gun as well. This helps us avoid the dangers of a negligent discharge.

Nothing is more ridiculous than someone saying, “I didn’t know it was loaded.” You need to open the action and visually inspect it for ammo. Now, insert a finger into the barrel to make sure. Look down into the elevator area as well as at the follower. Now close the action and inspect the follower once again just to make sure. Once you are 100% satisfied the gun is clear, you can proceed.

Visually inspect the chamber to make sure it is unloaded.

Now that we are ready to get to work we need a safe, well lit area to clean. You will need just the basics for this cleaning. A rag, cleaning solution, bore snake, and some gun oil. While I would love to go into deep detail and disassemble the gun completely, yours may be different. Because there are so many different models, we will just be doing a general cleaning on how to clean your shotgun.

Roll Out The Barrel

First, we will clean the barrel. Open the action and prepare your bore snake. Personally, I add a little cleaning solution to the snake. We want our cleaning to move down the barrel to avoid bringing any particulates or grime into the action area.

Insert the weighted lead on the snake into the action and feed it down the barrel. Let it drop all the way down until it is hanging out the bottom. Now, pull the snake through the barrel. It will be snug, but that is not a problem at all. Repeat this at least one more time. Now, the barrel is generally clean.

The bore snake will have a weighted end to help feed it down the barrel.

We now move into the action and bolt. Liberally apply the cleanser to the bolt and action area and let it sit for a moment. Now, with a clean rag, wipe out the action area. Do your best to get into the crevices and channels. There are a number of companies that make great tools to help with cleaning. Once again, I don’t know what you have available, so let’s keep it simple. Once the inside of the action is clean, close the bolt and repeat the process of how to clean your shotgun. Take your time and clean the outside of the gun as well,

Lube it

Now, we will lubricate the shotgun. Apply oil of your choice to the body of the bolt. Add some into the bar area as well as on the action bars. Anywhere you can see rub point where finish is missing need special attention. Open the action and lubricate the moving parts inside as well.

Apply oil to all metal surfaces and rub points.

Lastly, close the action and wipe off any excess oil that may be on the stock. Do a thorough visual inspection now for cracks or other issues. Once this is done, the shotgun is ready to go. Repeat this process after long-range sessions or even after the gun has been sitting in storage for a while. In many cases, we rely on these guns to protect our lives. We need to make sure they are clean and maintained. Understanding how to clean your shotgun properly ensures its reliability and longevity.

A Forensic Investigation to Unravel Climate Model Biases in Teleconnections

Teleconnections are usually manifested as recurring patterns which link weather and climate anomalies (departures from long-term average) over large distances across the globe (e.g., Wallace and Gutzler 1981). Therefore, they play an important role in shaping climate variability and regional climate change. One striking example is El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection (Figure 1). ENSO is the most prominent year-to-year internal variability in the climate system, although ENSO itself occurs in the tropical Pacific and is reflected as a fluctuation between unusually warm and cold conditions, it excites wave-trains propagating into the extratropics which then strongly affect the precipitation and temperature over mid-high latitudes (e.g., Trenberth et al. 1998). Moreover, the extratropical circulation response to ENSO can further influence the upward propagation of planetary waves in the midlatitudes, thereby leading to significant changes of the stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) via the wave-mean flow interaction (e.g. Domeisen et al., 2019). The induced SPV anomaly, in return, can further descend into the troposphere, modulating the weather condition in the midlatitudes. For instance, this ENSO-SPV linkage is shown to strongly contribute to the cooling over northern Europe in late winter following El Niño (e.g., Ineson and Scaife 2009). Hence, studying teleconnections is not only helpful to better understand the atmospheric circulation variability, but is also key to improving the prediction skill.

While the observations are the starting point for studying teleconnections, the limited records make it difficult to draw robust conclusions based on observations alone. On the one hand, the climate system is complex, and the relationships sometimes vary in different time periods (e.g., Dong and McPhaden 2017). On the other hand, the simple correlation between two circulations does not always indicate a physical teleconnection, it can sometimes instead reflect co-varying changes in response to other factors (Kretschmer et al. 2021).  

To address this problem, climate model simulations are widely used as they can provide more samples. However, climate models do not always agree with the observed teleconnections, in which case the discrepancy is known as model bias.. There are two main potential reasons for the discrepancy. First, the climate models may fail to capture the key physical processes and therefore cannot reproduce the teleconnections. Second, due to the limited sample size in the observations, the discrepancy may reflect the internal variability of the climate system. Therefore, to confidently use models to study teleconnections and the related aspects, scientific judgement is needed to justify the suitability of models when there are apparent discrepancies (e.g. Jain et al. 2023). In our recent research, we have advocated the use of a forensic investigation approach to understand the discrepancies between climate models and observations, which then helps to make the decision on whether the model outputs can be trusted.  

The literal definition of a forensic investigation is the scientific analysis of physical evidence from a crime scene. The logic behind it is to conduct a thorough examination of the evidence to establish the facts and uncover the truth. In the context of assessing model discrepancies in teleconnections, a physically-based analysis is required to understand their origin, which can then provide an evidential basis for deciding whether a model is appropriate for a given scientific purpose. Since the logic is similar with that of solving crime puzzles, the term forensic is used here to characterize our approach (Figure 12). In the following, the case of ENSO-SPV relationship will be shown as an example of how to extract reliable information from the model output using the forensic investigation approach.

In a climate model called the MIROC6, the ENSO-SPV relationship is opposite to observations. At the first glance, it seems that this model is not suitable for studying the ENSO-SPV relationship and related scientific questions. However, according to the physically-based analysis, we found that MIROC6 model actually well captures the relevant dynamical processes, including the extratropical response to ENSO, the anomalous upward propagation of planetary waves, and the wave-mean flow interaction in the stratosphere. The discrepancy is further shown to be mainly related to the wave propagation within the stratosphere, which eventually lead to the different SPV response. This reflects that the causal linkage between ENSO and SPV is shaped by other factors and/or background states, known as the state dependence. Therefore, although the model shows an opposite ENSO-SPV relationship to the observation, it is physically reasonable.  

Furthermore, the observations show a state dependence similar to that of the model results, in that the observed ENSO-SPV relationship is not stable and is shaped by other factors, such as the ocean background condition (e.g. Rao et al. 2019). The observational evidence neither supports nor contradicts this state dependence found in the model due to the limited sample size. Thus, depending on the specific purpose of the research, different choices can be made in how to use the model simulations.  

If the study does not require a stable teleconnection, for example, if it is used to study non-stationarity and state dependence, then the model can be used directly to provide conditional information. On the other hand, if the study requires a stable teleconnection consistent with observations, then the model should be used only after the application of a physically-based bias adjustment. In the ENSO-SPV relationship case, under the assumption that the state-dependance is spurious, a physically-based bias adjustment is applied to SPV, which effectively aligns the modelled ENSO-SPV relationship with the observations, thereby removes the model-observations discrepancy in the surface air temperature response. 

This case gives an example of how the forensic approach could help us to better understand the difference between models and observations, allowing us to make full use of climate model outputs (Figure 3). Similar physically-based approaches have been widely used in the climate research in recent decades (e.g., Kretschmer et al. 2020; Shepherd 2021), providing us with more opportunities to gain a more holistic view of model performance and to extract more information from models

Cougar packages the Poseidon Ultra 360 ARGB cooler in large, durable cardboard boxes. While the box maintains the company’s signature black and orange color scheme, it prominently features vibrant images showcasing the RGB lighting capabilities of the cooler, making it a visually striking package. Inside, the cooler and its components are securely protected by custom cardboard inserts, ensuring safe transport.

The box contains a rather basic bundle for a premium CPU cooler. Cougar includes the necessary cables for powering the fans and the controller, a single-use dose of thermal compound, and the hardware required for mounting the cooler onto the CPU socket. There is no standalone RGB controller, the cooler requires a compatible motherboard or controller available to function.

The cooler is equipped with three 120 mm fans that feature a unique frame design, blades with convex ridges, and an advanced hydraulic bearing for improved performance and durability. Although the specific original manufacturer of the fans is not disclosed, the part number is DF1202512FDMN. These fans are outfitted with ARGB LEDs and have a semi-transparent blade and inner ring assembly, which is designed to diffuse the lighting softly, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the cooler.

The Poseidon Ultra 360 ARGB cooler from Cougar maintains a design typical of all-in-one (AIO) liquid coolers, consisting of a single radiator, two hoses, and a block that integrates the CPU contact plate with a compact liquid pump. Cougar went with typical rubber tubing with an external nylon sleeve for added mechanical protection. The fittings are plastic, as is the case with the majority of AIO coolers nowadays.

The radiator in the Poseidon Ultra 360 ARGB follows the standard dual-pass cross-flow design, with fine fins soldered onto thin oblong tubes. This design remains the industry standard for AIO systems due to its superior efficiency within the compact dimensions required and the temperature variations these coolers manage. The hose connections on the radiator are fixed, which can limit flexibility a little during installation. Cougar designed the radiator to be just 27 mm thick to ensure greater compatibility. However, with the fans included, the entire AIO system still requires at least 52 mm of clearance, making it essential to install this cooler in a case designed for AIO systems.

Cougar’s design efforts are particularly evident in the main block assembly. Except for the contact plate, the rest of the assembly is made of plastic and acrylic, with Cougar making severe efforts to make the block as visually appealing as possible. The top of the block assembly can be removed if turned counterclockwise softly, allowing the user to adjust the logo’s orientation (yes, the large hex screw heads are fake). The 90° hose fittings can swivel, adding some flexibility to the installation process.

The main block assembly features a squircle-shaped metallic contact plate made of copper. The plate is not machined to a mirror finish but it is smooth and flat enough. The designer hid the screws holding the cold plate in place behind the plastic cover. No thermal compound is pre-applied, giving users the option to use their preferred thermal paste. The contact plate is large enough for all the processors this cooler is compatible with.

Cougar has put significant emphasis on RGB lighting with the Poseidon Ultra 360 ARGB, resulting in an impressive display. The lighting is both vibrant and smooth, effectively diffused by the semi-transparent blades of the fans and the top of the main block. If connected to a compatible motherboard, the cooler will sync with the system’s lighting theme. Note that if the motherboard does not support 5V ARGB LEDs and if there is no other available controller, the lighting of the Poseidon Ultra 360 ARGB will not turn on at all.

Disney’s mobile gacha game that features Kermit the Frog as a banjo-swinging Swamp King is shutting down

Did you know Disney had made a mobile gacha game? Turns out the company has made several, though one of them will soon be hanging out with Bambi’s mum and Captain Barbossa, as Disney Mirrorverse will soon be shutting down. The game has been taken off mobile stores, microtransaction sales have been ceased, and the game will go offline December 16.

This announcement was made on the game’s official website, its Discord server, and other official platforms yesterday. The official statement explains the the final updates coming to the game will be wrapping up its story, a silver lining to those who’ve invested a lot of time (and money) into the game.

“Our sincere thanks to you, our amazing community of players, who have made this journey unforgettable.” writes senior community manager Kabam Pinwheel. “Your support and passionate dedication to the game is truly inspiring to our team. Being able to create this game, and evolving beloved characters and worlds in new and imaginative ways has been a labor of love and our great honor.”

These sorts of games are always a big deal to the community of players invested in them. As a baseline, all online game closures are a sad affair for the players, but with live service and gacha game enjoyers it’s especially devestating due to the sums of cash sunk into them.

For what it’s worth, Mirrorverse looked pretty cool. Various Disney characters could interact with eachother, and the RPG gameplay seemed distinct enough to warrant interest from players. Perhaps the most immediately interesting bit is the character designs, as the art team clearly had some fun with the characters added to the game over time. Take Kermit, a bardic warrior who slams enemies around with his banjo. A nice bit of effort to be sure.

For those who still have the game, they’ll be able to experience its dying moments over the coming weeks. The game has a few YouTube channels dedicated to it that still upload content, so I’m sure you’ll be able to pop by them to see the grand finale. Full disclosure, I know precious little about Mirrorverse’s narrative, but my fingers are crossed for some kind of tragic tear-jerker. Go out with a bang, literally – like Final Fantasy 14 – or figuratively.

A recent study by Ubuy examined 51 countries to determine the top ten for souvenir popularity. The research gathered data on the most popular souvenir in each country, its price, annual international tourist arrivals in those countries, international tourism expenditures, and estimated earnings from souvenir sales. To measure media popularity, 2024 searches for souvenirs were considered. Ultimately, a composite score was calculated for each country’s souvenir to establish the rankings.

France tops the list, with the Eiffel Tower keychain being the most popular souvenir in the world, with a composite score of 50. The country sees the highest annual international tourist arrivals, at 117.1 million, as well as international tourism expenditures of 31.193 million, the second-highest amount on the list. 

Poland ranks second with its popular amber jewelry, which has earned the highest estimated earnings from souvenir sales at more than $1.6 billion. Poland also sees 88.5 million annual international tourist arrivals, contributing to international tourism expenditures of 31.1 million.

Italy takes third place with Murano glass pendants and a composite score of 39.2. The country welcomes 38.4 million international tourists annually and generates $12,965,000 in international tourism expenditures. Italy’s souvenirs are quite popular, as reflected by 218,091 searches in 2024, the second-highest amount on the list.

Canada follows in fourth place with its iconic maple syrup, attracting 32.4 million international tourists annually. Tourism expenditures in the country are $41,247,000, the second-highest amount after the US. Estimated earnings from souvenir sales stand at $239,760,000.

Spain’s top souvenir is the miniature Flamenco dress, ranking fifth on the list. The country attracts 36.4 million international tourists each year, with tourism expenditures reaching $7,119,000. With 141,279 searches for souvenirs and estimated earnings of more than $1 billion from souvenir sales, Spain achieves a composite score of 34.3.

The United States is noted for its Statue of Liberty T-shirt and takes the sixth position. The country draws 45 million international tourists yearly. With the most international tourism expenditures of $48,837,000 and the least amount of searches for souvenirs in 2024 at 18,820, the U.S. achieves a composite score of 30.4. Estimated earnings from souvenir sales amount to $675,000,000.

Thailand is recognized for its silk scarves and attracts 39.9 million international tourists annually. The country sees tourism expenditures of $3,681,000 and 127,657 searches for souvenirs in 2024, earning it a composite score of 29.5. Estimated earnings from souvenir sales are $231,420,000.

Japan takes the eighth position with a composite score of 28.1. The country stands out with the Yukata (summer kimono), the most expensive ($37) and the most searched souvenir in 2024 at 301,796 searches. Despite welcoming only 4.1 million international tourists annually, Japan’s tourism expenditures reach $6,741,000. 

The Czech Republic holds ninth place, with Bohemian crystal as the most popular souvenir sample. The country attracts 37.2 million international tourists yearly and sees a tourism expenditure of $6,034,000, with 29,356 searches for souvenirs in 2024. Estimated earnings from souvenir sales are $837 million, the fourth-most amount on the list.

Mexico rounds out the top ten with its Talavera pottery tiles. The country draws 51.1 million international tourists annually, generating international tourism expenditures of $4,286,000. With 51,124 searches for souvenirs this year, the estimated earnings from souvenir sales are $281,050,000.
