I didn’t like Los Angeles at first. I found it too spread out and just didn’t like the vibes. I also felt there wasn’t a lot “to do” relative to a place like Paris or London or Tokyo.
But, once I stopped trying to fit Los Angeles into the typical tourist mold and gave the city a chance, I really began to appreciate LA’s unique charm and laid-back lifestyle. That’s when I truly fell in love with the city, and I suspect you will too. It’s a city built for residents, not tourists.
But, if you (like me) are a visitor, you’ll still need a great place to stay. Your choice of hotel can make or break a trip. Since the city is so spread out, where you stay will have a big impact on what you see and how much time you spend in traffic.
I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels in Los Angeles over the years. To help you have an unforgettable time in the City of Angels, here’s a list of my favorite hotels in LA:
1. The Kinney
The Kinney Hotel is a vibrant three-star boutique hotel in Venice Beach. I think it really captures the essence of the city’s laid-back, artistic spirit. I love the hotel’s fun and youthful character, with its colorful decor, quirky art installations, and retro-inspired furnishings. There are a lot of amenities here too, including a heated outdoor pool, a stylish lounge area with fire pits, bike rentals, and a fitness center. The hotel’s central courtyard is a social hub (which they call The Quad) and features ping pong tables and a cozy lounge space, perfect for relaxing or mingling with fellow travelers.
The stylish rooms have a quirky vibe too, with wooden furniture and colorful artwork on the walls. The bathrooms, while a bit dated, are decently sized and covered in colorful tiles and artwork. They also feature complimentary toiletries and fluffy bathrobes. There’s underground parking on-site (rare for LA), which is perfect if you’re on a SoCal road trip.

2. Sixty Beverly Hills
This contemporary four-star hotel is in the heart of iconic Beverly Hills. Sixty features sleek, modern interiors with mid-century design elements (like geometric shapes, minimalist wooden furniture, and wide open spaces). I especially love the rooftop pool and lounge with its panoramic city views. There’s also a trendy on-site restaurant and bar that serves inventive cuisine and craft cocktails. It’s pretty pricey, but that’s just LA.
The rooms and suites are huge and boast sleek hardwood floors, custom furnishings, luxurious bedding, and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning views of Beverly Hills or the LA skyline. Some rooms have balconies too. Amenities include a writing desk, plush bedding, a flatscreen TV, Nespresso machine, and a well-stocked minibar. 3. Venice V Hotel
This historic 1915 building was once home to Charlie Chaplin. It’s since been renovated into a chic three-star hotel that perfectly embodies the eclectic and bohemian vibe of Venice Beach. It’s just steps away from the iconic Muscle Beach, and I really like that they provide helpful beach amenities, like beach cruisers as well as umbrellas and chairs to use.
Each room is uniquely designed in one of three themes: Boho, Artist, or Dogtown. I love that all rooms have stunning ocean views, so you can wake up and gaze at the wide-open expanse. The beds are really comfy and have fluffy down pillows too. The spacious bathrooms have beautifully tiled walk-in showers, Aesop bath amenities, and soft bathrobes. This is the best place to stay if you want to splash out on a stay in one of LA’s most famous neighborhoods.

4. Shutters on the Beach
Shutters on the Beach is a luxurious five-star hotel that exudes a classic, coastal charm reminiscent of a grand beach house. Located directly on the sands of Santa Monica, this seaside hotel has an inviting yet elegant atmosphere, with curated art pieces adorning the walls. I like the fact that they have a range of top-notch amenities, including a full-service spa, an oceanfront pool and hot tub, and multiple dining options (one of which provides breakfast) serving fresh, locally sourced cuisine.
The hotel has a beachy design with airy, sunlit rooms. It also boasts hardwood floors, refined Tibetan rugs, artwork by local artists, and little in-room libraries. The rooms have all the amenities you’d expect from a hotel of this caliber. The plush bathrobes, slippers, and premium bath products are really lovely too. Most rooms even offer private balconies with stunning ocean views. It’s the perfect retreat for those who want laid-back luxury.

5. CitizenM Los Angeles
This four star-hotel is the perfect spot for the modern traveler looking for comfort, style, and convenience without breaking the bank. I’m a big fan of this brand (they’re huge in Europe), with its minimalist design and vibrant, art-filled interiors. I also love all the communal spaces where you can work or unwind, from the cozy living room-style lobby to the rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city. The breakfast buffet is really expansive too with pastries, healthy choices, and hot dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausages.
Part of citizenM’s concept is to offer one room type that’s compact yet thoughtfully designed to optimize the space. All rooms have fridges, comfy king-sized beds, fluffy pillows, blackout blinds, and soundproofing so you can get a good sleep. 6. Andaz West Hollywood
This five-star hotel by Hyatt is the place to be if you want modern luxury right on the iconic Sunset Strip. (It was actually the first hotel on the strip!) I love this brand a lot and this location has a lot of open and airy spaces featuring local artists. The rooftop pool is the highlight of the hotel though. Make sure to come up here to relax on the loungers or take some epic panoramic photos. Another nice touch is the complimentary wine between 4pm and 5pm every evening.
The rooms are spacious and stylish, offering floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping views of either the Hollywood Hills or Los Angeles skyline. Each room has a minimalist style and amenities like flatscreen TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and a complimentary minibar with snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. The beds are comfy, and I appreciate the spacious work desks too. The stylish bathrooms feature spacious walk-in rain showers, plush robes, and complimentary designer toiletries.

Not since the lead-up to the financial crisis have bond traders been so divided about the outcome of the next Federal Reserve decision.
With only two days to go, whether Fed policymakers will cut interest rates by a quarter-point or a half point is considered a tossup in US interest-rate markets. Except for the Fed’s emergency rate cut in March 2020 at the onset of the pandemic, that’s the greatest amount of doubt in interest-rate swap markets for any scheduled US central bank decision since 2007, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The analysis is based on the difference between the swap rate that predicts Fed decisions two days before they were made, and the rate that ultimately was decided upon. Fed policymakers have all but guaranteed a rate cut this week — the first since 2020. Before entering a self-imposed quiet period on Sept. 7, however, they offered disparate assessments of whether the risk of additional labor-market weakening warranted a move larger than 25 basis points, which could reignite inflation.
“It is a close call,” wrote Philip Marey, a senior US strategist at Rabobank, who expects the Fed to deliver a standard quarter-point decrease. Lack of guidance from Fed Chair Jerome Powell could indicate that the committee “has not reached a consensus yet.” Meanwhile, August retail sales data to be released Tuesday “could still alter the calculus.”
Until last week, when several media reports quoted former Fed officials making the case for a bigger move, traders had all but ruled out a rate cut larger than 25 basis points.
Bill Dudley, a former president of the New York Fed and a Bloomberg Opinion columnist, chimed in Monday in favor of a half-point rate cut.
Swaps tied to this week’s Fed’s decision priced in a reduction of 37 basis points from the current effective fed funds rate of about 5.3%. That splits the difference between a quarter-point and a half-point cut. A total of 117 basis points of easing was priced in for the year, embedding an expectation that the Fed will do a half-point rate cut, if not this week then at one of this year’s two remaining meetings in November and December.
The yield on two-year Treasuries shed about 3 basis points to 3.56% on Monday, extending a rally from over 5% in late April. Ten-year yields declined less, to 3.63%, widening the gap between two to about 7 basis points. The short-term yield was more than a percentage point higher following the Fed’s 11 rate increases in 2022 and 2023, and it was higher for a record amount of time.
Yield-curve steepening has become a popular trade on Wall Street, with strategists at Bank of America, BMO Capital Markets, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Morgan Stanley advocating various forms of it ahead of this week’s Fed meeting.
Meanwhile, the Bloomberg dollar index fell 0.4% Monday, extending its erosion against most major currencies over the past month as the Fed’s easing cycle draws near. The yen was among the biggest gainers, advancing past the closely watched 140 per dollar level on Monday.
“We see a new and imminent Fed easing cycle as a major headwind for the dollar,” said Rodrigo Catril, strategist at National Australia Bank Ltd. “The dollar will embark on a cyclical decline as the Fed eases and takes the fund rate toward neutral, if not below, next year.”
Less than two months before the presidential election, the Fed pivot comes against the backdrop of an increasingly fraught political situation in the US. Three Democratic senators urged the Fed to aggressively cut the central bank’s benchmark interest rate, including by 75 basis points this week, to protect the US economy from potential harm.
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating an apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, just two months the Republican presidential candidate was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania.
With Fed members in a blackout period before the Sept. 17-18 policy meeting, traders have few data points to rely on beyond the August retail sales report.

When the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, it revealed another wall unseen for decades. Tens of thousands of children living behind the walls of orphanages across Eastern Europe were seen for the first time, and it was a heartbreaking sight. Years of institutionalization left generations of boys and girls scarred and aimless.
Western organizations such as Buckner International moved into countries like Russia to serve these orphans. At first, our approach was intercountry adoption. From 1995 until Russia closed these adoptions in 2013, Buckner placed more than 350 children in U.S. homes. But 350 children out of more than 1 million wasn’t enough, and intercountry adoption couldn’t be the only solution.
Wanting to serve more children, we began training orphanage workers and introducing in-country, family-centered care — a holistic approach to supporting children and their parents. That model aligns with our belief that every child belongs in a family, not an institution.

International adoptions have fallen drastically from their peak in 2004. Still, it’s often seen as one of the most tangible and sacrificial ways Christians carry out the instructions in the book of James to support the orphan. It’s a concept Christians easily connect with, but many are unaware that vulnerable children can be supported in their own countries. Research shows that 4 of 5 children in orphanages have living families — families that could raise their children with some support.
That means while international adoption rates have drastically decreased in the last two decades, the opportunities to help vulnerable children in these countries haven’t. An alternative exists, one that allows children to stay with their families and thrive in their communities, connected to their own culture.
In 2004, 22,988 intercountry adoptions took place in the U.S. In 2023, the total was 1,275 — a 95% drop. For most Americans, the change seems shocking and confusing.
The rapid decline of international adoption rates stems from a myriad of complex and nuanced reasons, yet a few stand out. The 1993 Hague Convention, an international agreement to improve and safeguard children in the intercountry adoption process, resulted in slowed adoptions as countries worked to become compliant with the new standards. Many adoption programs halted because irregularities were found.
Some larger international adoption agencies in the U.S. have shifted their models and resources to support vulnerable children in families and local communities in an attempt to deinstitutionalize them, while many smaller agencies shuttered because of increased regulations. In some countries, the number of domestic adoptions is increasing; in others, world events, crises, or political maneuvering are playing a role. Additionally, corruption, prohibitive costs, and extended wait times are leaving children stranded.
We applaud and recognize the beauty of international adoption for those who made it a part of their family’s story. Yet we must acknowledge that most of the 5 to 8 million children in orphanages today will not have this same story. International adoption as a model was never going to be a widespread solution, and today it’s even less viable. Still, opportunities abound for helping children around the world, and U.S. Christians have a key role to play.
If we want to help vulnerable children, we can support organizations that strengthen their families and communities. At Buckner, we focus on three pillars — protect children, strengthen families, and transform generations.
Family and community-based care models accomplish those three goals by offering a broad range of services, from education, childcare, and mentoring to job and financial training, health care, and various social services. When biological families are equipped and empowered to care for their children, everyone does better.
By supporting this model, we actively help keep children out of the orphanage system. And for those already in such a system, we can create lasting and generational change by shifting resources toward local, family-oriented programs and, when needed, encouraging and celebrating domestic adoptions.
Children belong in families. It’s where they thrive. However, the solution to the number of children still in orphanages around the world will not be solved by international adoptions alone. It is time for U.S. Christians to wholeheartedly embrace family-strengthening initiatives — the viable and sustainable alternative. Each of us can help vulnerable families right where they are, from right where we are.

In the east end of Toronto, a new architectural project seamlessly blends innovative design with the natural contours of its landscape. The four-bedroom, single-family Neville Park residence, conceived by the Canadian studio Reigo & Bauer, is set within a unique gully that features steep slopes on both the front and rear of the property. The architects have transformed this challenging site into a striking and cohesive structure that stands out while harmonizing with its surroundings.
The home’s tall, vertical structure is a deliberate nod to the towering trees that line the hillside, creating a visual dialogue between the built environment and the natural landscape. The exterior is clad in gray, diamond-shaped tiles that wrap the entire building, including the garage and roof, creating a unified and sculptural volume. To maximize light and privacy, the design features strategic setbacks and angular cuts in the façade, particularly on the south side. This allows for additional windows and an entryway that is both practical and visually distinct.
The use of geometric forms continues on the roof, where triangular facets connect the offset pitch peaks, adding a dynamic element to the structure. Narrow, staggered windows punctuate both the front and back of the home, allowing ample natural light to flood the interior while maintaining a sense of privacy. The dining room, positioned at the front, features windows that extend above the ceiling line, further emphasizing the verticality of the design. In the rear, the living room’s ceiling curves upward, following the line of the elongated windows and drawing the eye toward the wooded hill behind the house.
Inside, the layout is both functional and fluid, with a central block on the entry level housing essential amenities like a powder room, pantry, and storage. This core element helps to organize the surrounding spaces, which flow effortlessly from one area to the next without the need for doors. The kitchen, situated between the dining and living rooms, is outfitted with minimalist white cabinetry, offering a clean and understated aesthetic.
A muted green wall, positioned between the kitchen and staircases, features playful pill-shaped cutouts that allow light and sightlines to connect the upper and lower levels. This wall continues to the upper floor, where it becomes a solid bannister for the skylit corridor that links the bedrooms. The primary suite is located at the rear, offering a serene retreat with views of the natural surroundings. Another bedroom is found in the basement, tucked behind the garage, providing extra privacy and space.
The home’s interior palette is predominantly neutral, with light oak floors and white walls serving as a backdrop for the homeowners’ personal touches. My main aim for participating in the 2024 HART Prize for Human Rights Competition was to advocate for my community and to shed light on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
I discovered the competition through my research into opportunities for broadening my human rights experience, and was immediately impressed by the work that HART did to help communities in need. I recognised that the competition was a great opportunity to shed light on a massive, under-represented humanitarian crisis that personally affected me:
On April 15th, 2023, a civil war broke out in Sudan between the SAF and RSF forces. It’s led to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time, where mass violence, starvation, and displacement have become a daily reality for millions of Sudanese people living in the country. My family, who had been living in Sudan for generations, was forced to leave everything behind and seek refuge in Egypt. I dedicated my essay to them.
When I realised how unknown this crisis was in the West, I wanted to do my part to change that. So, I wrote about the situation in Sudan, offering recommendations for bringing about an end to the crisis and establishing lasting peace in the region. I was ecstatic to find out that I had won, partly because it was a great achievement, but mostly because I knew that it would bring attention to the crisis and the ongoing suffering of the Sudanese people.
After winning the HART Prize, I was given an amazing tour of the Palace of Westminster; a highlight for me was seeing the House of Commons Chamber. I completed a day of work experience with HART, where I crafted some Questions for Written Answer for Parliamentary review on the crisis in Sudan, which have been tabled. I also had the privilege of seeing my essay published. I am thankful to my hosts and new friends for having me, Beth Stephens and Bethany Oliver-Dee.
The opportunity to be part of such a prestigious competition dedicated to human rights advocacy was truly inspiring and fulfilling. I hope to continue to bring more attention to the crisis in Sudan and to upscale my human rights work.
