Jordin Sparks Releases New Holiday Song

0

The Holidays are right around the corner and as an early gift, Us Weekly can exclusively reveal Jordin Sparks’ new holiday song.

Sparks’ track “S-N-O-W” is featured on the EP Growin’ Up Holiday, which is set to be released on Friday, October 18.

In honor of the new song , Sparks, 34, opened up to Us about her holiday traditions — and what she still does with her son, DJ, whom she shares DJ with husband Dana Isaiah.

“When I was growing up, I loved making popcorn balls with my family. DJ and I really enjoy being in the kitchen and being ‘taste tester’ for the sweet treats!” Sparks says.

As Will Ferrell’s Buddy the Elf once said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear!” Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson and more musicians have taken that message to heart — releasing their own original holiday songs over the years. Wham! seemingly kicked off the trend of recording fresh and […]

In “S-N-O-W,” Sparks sings the lyrics, “I want to snow / everywhere that I go” and “I want to make angel wings while it falls from the sky / Want to turn snowflakes into snowball fights / Santa hurry, can you make it flurry fast? Is it too much to ask?”

But for the Arizona native, she admits the itch to see snow isn’t as strong — after all, she is a West Coast girl!

“I remember thinking that it was beautiful but I didn’t want to be in it,” Sparks tells Us about experiencing her first snowfall.

And for her husband, “Dana is originally from Chicago so he has seen a lot of snow in his life,” she adds with a laugh.

It’s safe to say that Sparks is excited for Christmas, as she previously told Us that it was her favorite holiday.

The festive EP also includes three other original holiday songs by artists Smithfield, Walk Off the Earth and Jaden Michaels (who also serves as executive producer). It’s an extension of Platoon’s family-friendly music series that started with Growin’ Up Country Vol. 1 & 2, Growin’ Up Holiday.

With “S-N-O-W,” the Season 6 American Idol winner can now add another holiday song to her beloved discography. Last year, Sparks released The Gift of Christmas, an EP full of four classic holiday songs: “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Jingle Bells,” “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Silent Night.” She released Cider & Hennessy in 2020, which includes 10 original holiday songs and has performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade three times.

Looking for Futures Arbitrage in the Stock Tape

0

We know that U.S. equity futures and S&P 500 index prices track each other very closely, so clearly arbitrage occurs.

But as futures trade way more value than stocks each day (Chart 1), that means not every futures trade leads to stock arbitrage, which raises an interesting question: How much does futures arbitrage add to stock volumes?

Today, using low latency data, we identify large amounts of the value in the S&P 500 index trading in one microsecond and estimate how much futures arbitrage is adding to stock trading per day.

Chart 1: Futures trade more notional than all stocks combined

Futures are cheaper to trade than stocks

We estimate that crossing spreads on futures is much cheaper than crossing spreads on the full portfolio of S&P 500 stocks. As we see below, spreads on S&P 500 futures are around 1 basis point (bps), while spreads on the portfolio of stocks are more than 4 bps. That makes buying and selling futures notably cheaper than buying the stocks themselves (before accounting for roll and settlement costs).

Interestingly, spreads on the S&P 500 exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are also cheaper than stocks, so some arbitrage might affect the ETF market before it affects the stock market.

Chart 2: Spreads across different S&P 500 index exposures

Spreads across different S&P 500 index exposures

Both spreads need to be crossed in an arbitrage

What makes spreads even more important is the fact that, before arbitrage occurs, the bids and offers of each asset class need to overlap. In short, an arbitrageur needs to cross both spreads.

We show how arbitrage works, in theory, in the diagram below: The futures offer needs to be cheaper than the bid on all the stocks in the S&P 500 portfolio for an arbitrageur to collect profits (and that’s before settlement and fixed trading costs).

Given how small the spread on the futures is (compared to the stock basket), it’s likely the futures could tick up and down inside the stock spread without triggering stock arbitrage.

Chart 3: Spreads across exposures for different S&P 500 index product types

Spreads across exposures for different S&P 500 index product types

However, as we recently noted, an arbitrageur might not need to wait for the WHOLE basket to be mis-priced to execute an optimized arbitrage. For example, a decent risk-reward may exist when trading as few as 100 stocks against the futures price. We estimate a basket of the 100 largest stocks in the S&P 500 have a lower 3.7 bps spread.

Either way, stocks are unlikely to arbitrage every time futures tick, which helps explain why futures trade even more than stocks.

Using low latency data to spot futures trades

Another way to look for futures arb trades is to extend some of the recent work we have been doing on the U.S. market latency.

In our latest study, we looked at how an ISO order for each stock sweeps across the different stock markets in just milliseconds (us).

We also know that futures can trade in Chicago — more than 700 miles (around 3.9k us or 4 microseconds (ms) by microwave) away from where stocks trade in New Jersey. Looking at the map below, all three of the New Jersey trading centers are essentially the same distance from Chicago, so, in theory, if an arbitrageur trades stocks against futures, we should see instances when many (if not all) of the S&P 500 stocks trade in the same millisecond — regardless of whether the trade starts in Chicago or New Jersey.

So today, we look for instances when many of the S&P 500 constituents trade in the same millisecond.

Chart 4: Speed of light distance between futures and stock exchanges

Speed of light distance between futures and stock exchanges

We also picked a date when the market was reasonably volatile (Jan. 19, 2024, to be exact), thinking that would be more likely to make prices dislocate enough for arbitrage to occur. Then, we looked at all the S&P 500 stocks each millisecond and counted how many of them saw trade activity.

We plot the results below, summed by cumulative S&P 500 index weight that trades (blue bars). We also track the price for the S&P 500 ETF (VOO) to show volatile periods. The time axis shows only the events with over 20% of the index (by weights) trading in the same millisecond.

Chart 5: Adding up how much of the S&P 500 index trades in the same millisecond over one (somewhat volatile) day

Adding up how much of the S&P 500 index trades in the same millisecond over one (somewhat volatile) day

Some things we see are:

  • Instances where 70% or more of the S&P 500 by index weight is traded within the same millisecond are relatively rare (dark blue bars). Although, when they do occur, it seems that the VOO price also gaps up or down, which is consistent with price changes that may lead to more arbitrage opportunities.
  • Clusters of around 30% of the index weights trading in the same millisecond happen much more frequently.
  • Stronger arbitrage seems to be clustered by time. On this date, activity seems to be higher from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., and again around 12:30 p.m. and between 2:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Activity into the close is also concentrated but a notably different color, indicating a mid-sized arb portfolio.

Futures arbitrage is less important than you might think

Overall, it seems that futures arbitrage happens consistently during the day, but mostly in optimized baskets. If we look at the value of all the stock trades in the bars in Chart 5, assuming these trades are related to arbitrage, we see notional of around $8.4 billion traded. That’s around 3% of all trading on a typical day.

This all helps us understand why stocks trade less than futures. It is about half as much as our previous estimates of the impact on the underlying stock markets.

Additionally, this means that there is even more liquidity in the stock market that would resemble more stock or sector specific trades, ensuring that index trading doesn’t overwhelm price discovery and efficient capital allocation.

Your Solution For Puffiness, Dark Circles, And Fine Lines

Under-eye patches have gained popularity as a go-to solution for addressing various concerns related to the delicate skin beneath the eyes. These patches, typically made from a gel or sheet material infused with active ingredients, are designed to provide hydration, reduce puffiness, and diminish the appearance of dark circles.

What Are Under Eye Patches?

Under-eye patches are small, often semi-transparent, gel or fabric-based treatments that adhere to the skin beneath the eyes. They are usually shaped to fit the under-eye area and are often infused with a variety of beneficial ingredients. Common components include hyaluronic acid, collagen, peptides, caffeine, and botanical extracts, each chosen for its specific skin benefits.

The patches can vary in thickness, texture, and design. Some are designed for single use, while others are reusable. The patches work by delivering concentrated doses of active ingredients directly to the skin. This targeted application allows for more effective penetration than traditional creams or serums.

Uses of Under Eye Patches

The primary use of under-eye patches is to treat various skin concerns. One of the most prevalent issues is puffiness, which can be caused by a variety of factors including lack of sleep, stress, and allergies. The cooling effect of the patches can help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling, leading to a refreshed appearance.

Dark circles, another common concern, can result from genetics, fatigue, or aging. Many under-eye patches contain brightening agents that can help to diminish the appearance of these shadows, making the eyes look more vibrant. Additionally, these patches often provide hydration, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing fine lines.

In addition to these benefits, under-eye patches can also be a part of a self-care routine. Many users enjoy the ritual of applying them as a way to unwind and pamper themselves. The soothing experience of wearing the patches can promote relaxation and help alleviate stress, making it an excellent addition to any skincare regimen.

Who Should Use Under Eye Patches?

Under-eye patches can benefit various individuals, regardless of skin type. They are particularly useful for those who experience puffiness or dark circles regularly. People with busy lifestyles, those who frequently travel, or anyone who struggles with sleepless nights may find these patches especially helpful.

While most people can safely use under-eye patches, individuals with sensitive skin or specific skin conditions should exercise caution. It’s advisable to check the ingredient list for potential allergens and conduct a patch test before applying them extensively. Consulting with a dermatologist can also provide guidance tailored to one’s unique skin needs.

EPL data: Which player is fastest? Who walks and sprints the most?

0

Erling Haaland is quick, but nobody in the Premier League covers more ground walking than the Manchester City striker.

Haaland has been among the fastest players this campaign, reaching speeds as high as 35.7 kilometers per hour (kph), according to a study conducted by BBC Sport and Opta.

Only three Premier League players have clocked higher speeds for their respective clubs than Haaland, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven registering a league-high 37.1 kph. The Dutch center-back was also the fastest Premier League player last season, as well as the quickest at Euro 2024.

Top 10 fastest players at each club

Player Club Top Speed (kph)
Micky van de Ven Tottenham 37.1
Carlos Forbs Wolves 36.6
Anthony Elanga Nottingham Forest 35.9
Erling Haaland Manchester City 35.7

Alejandro Garnacho Manchester United 35.5
Cameron Archer Southampton 35.5
Pedro Neto Chelsea 35.4
Yankuba Minteh Brighton 35.4
Mohammed Kudus West Ham 35.3

Surprisingly, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, previously considered one of the fastest players in the league, is the 80th quickest.

The study only ranks the quickest players for each club, so Van de Ven’s Spurs teammate Timo Werner misses out despite registering the same speed as Haaland.

But Haaland, the Premier League’s leading scorer, knows how to pace himself. He’s walked 28.2km this season, nearly a kilometer more than the league’s second-highest stroller, Max Kilman of West Ham United.

Perhaps the tactic has helped Haaland open the season with 10 goals in seven Premier League games.

Cole Palmer Chelsea 25

The Norwegian is also among six players who have walked the furthest while also producing his team’s most sprints (96).

Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon is one of them, leading the Premier League with 187 sprints while walking a team-leading 25.2km. The league’s fastest player, Van de Ven, only has 82 sprints this term.

Nobody in the Premier League has covered more distance than Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes – and it’s not close.

The 25-year-old has covered almost 5km more than second-place Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United during 630 minutes played – a major factor that influenced the data in this category – in the Premier League this season.

A Temporary Buydown Could Make Sense While Mortgage Rates Continue to Fall

0

Last week, I argued that mortgage rates remain in a downward trend, despite some pullback lately.

The 30-year fixed had almost been sub-6% when the Fed announced its rate cut. That “sell the news” event led to a little bounce for rates.

Then a hotter-than-expected jobs report days later pushed the 30-year up to 6.5% and rates kept creeping higher from there.

They’re now closer to 6.625% and have reignited fears that the worst may not yet be behind us.

Whether that’s true or not, you can’t get a rate as low as you could just three weeks ago, and that makes the temporary buydown attractive again.

You Don’t Get Your Money Back on a Permanent Buydown

While some home buyers and mortgage refinancers were able to lock-in sub-6% rates in September, many are now looking at rates closer to 7% again.

This has made mortgage rates unattractive again, especially since there aren’t many lower-cost options around these days, such as adjustable-rate mortgages.

You’re basically stuck going with a 30-year fixed that isn’t worth keeping for anywhere close to 30 years.

And you’re paying a premium for it because the rate won’t adjust for the entire loan term.

One option to make it more palatable is to pay discount points to get a lower rate from the get-go.

But there’s one major downside to that. When you buy down your rate with discount points, it’s permanent. This means the money isn’t refunded if you sell or refinance early on.

You actually need to keep the loan for X amount of months to break even on the upfront cost.

For example, if you pay one mortgage point at closing on a $500,000 loan, that’s $5,000 that will need to be recouped via lower mortgage payments.

If rates happen to drop six months after you take out your home loan, and you refinance, that money isn’t going back in your pocket.

It’s gone forever. And that can obviously be a very frustrating situation.

Is It Time to Consider a Temporary Buydown Again?

The other option to get a lower mortgage rate is the temporary buydown, which as the name implies is only temporary.

Often, you get a lower rate for the first 1-3 years of the loan term before it reverts to the higher note rate.

While these have been painted as higher-risk because they’re akin to an adjustable-rate loan, they could still bridge the gap to lower rates in the future.

And perhaps most importantly, the money spent on the temporary buydown is refundable!

Yes, even if you go with a temporary buydown, then refinance or sell a month or two later, the funds are credited to your outstanding loan balance.

For example, if you’ve got $10,000 in temporary buydown funds and all of a sudden rates drop and a rate and term refinance makes sense, you can take advantage without losing that money.

Instead of simply eating the remaining funds, the money is typically used to pay down the mortgage, as explained in Fannie Mae’s chart above. Say you’ve got $9,000 left in your temporary buydown account.

When you go refinance, that $9,000 would go toward the loan payoff. So if the outstanding loan amount were $490,000, it’d be whittled down to $481,000.

Interestingly, this could also make your refinance cheaper. You’d now have a lower loan amount, potentially pushing you into a lower loan-to-value (LTV) tier.

What Are the Risks?

To sum things up, you’ve got three, maybe your options when taking out a mortgage today.

You can go with an ARM, though the discounts often aren’t great and not all banks/lenders offer them.

You can just go with a 30-year fixed and pay nothing in closing for a slightly higher rate, with the intention of refinancing sooner rather than later.

You can pay discount points at closing to buy down the rate permanently, but then you lose the money if you sell/refinance before the break-even date.

Or you go with a temporary buydown, enjoy a lower rate for the first 1-3 years, and hope to refinance into something permanent before the rate goes higher.

The risk with an ARM is that the rate eventually adjusts and could be unfavorable. As noted, they are also hard to come by right now and may not offer a large discount.

The risk with a standard no cost mortgage is the rate is higher and you could be stuck with it if rates don’t come down and/or you’re unable to refinance for whatever reason.

The risk with the permanent buy down is rates could continue falling (my guess) and you’d leave money on the table.

And the risk of a temporary buydown is somewhat similar to an ARM in that you could be stuck with the higher note rate if rates don’t come down. But at least you’ll know what that note rate is, and that it can’t go any higher.

Fara Williams makes claim about Mykhailo Mudryk fans won’t agree with

0

The BBC have just put up an article from their columnist Fara Williams which is all about Mykhailo Mudryk.

In it, the former Everton and Arsenal defender explains how she thinks Enzo Maresca is helping the winger develop.

“Maresca has been patient with Mudryk too. There is a definitely a talented player there, you can see that with his strengths of speed, getting in advanced positions and carrying the ball, the former England stalwart said.

“However, for young players, knowing what your strengths are and using them is difficult. Sometimes you want to do other things that might not suit you and you want to do too much,” she continued.

“Decision-making, which is the most important part of the game, is then not clear and that has been Mudryk’s problem You can, however, slowly see it coming and that is the same with the whole of Chelsea team.”

Major Mudryk issues remain unchanged, almost two years on

Well, you had us up until that last line, Fara. We’ve seen plenty of flashes from Mudryk, every since his debut cameo against Liverpool. But we’d be lying if we said we said we had noticed any consistency or improvement in his decision making in the time since then.

In fact, Mudryk’s strengths and weaknesses seem to remain exactly as they were the day he arrived, and that’s the biggest cause for concern of all. Almost two years have passed since Mudryk arrived, and despite having worked with a number of coaches now, and despite now playing in a really effective and functional team, there have been little to no signs of improvement from the Ukraine international.

We suggested just 6 months after he signed for Chelsea for a potential £89m that he needed a loan move, and we’ve seen nothing since to convince us that that wouldn’t have been the smart decision.

TIPTOE’s commitment to sustainability as a whole is exactly what the industry needs. The studio holds five principles above all: make things simple, make more with less, use the right materials, build to last, and design for disassembly. Transparency and pride surrounding these ideas is apparent throughout their work: “We believe that the world doesn’t need more furniture. It needs better furniture.”

Some MW3 players are getting extra Battle Pass Tokens but no one knows why

0

Throughout Season 5, MW3 and Warzone have offered free Battle Pass tokens as part of the Weekly Challenges. Or at least they should’ve, as it appears these tokens have only been given to some players and the reason why isn’t clear.

There isn’t long left of MW3 and Warzone Season 5, with Season 6 set to arrive on September 18. So, if you’re looking to claim all of the rewards and CoD Points on offer, you’ll want to make sure you reach Tier 100.

Players can speed up the process by earning Battle Pass tokens through the Weekly Challenges, but as many players just found out through a Reddit thread, not everyone can.

User ‘skrnroo06’ posted two Discord screenshots side by side, one with a player getting four Battle Pass Tokens for completing Week 7’s challenges, and another that didn’t.

The comments are full of players shocked and angry that they’ve never been offered tokens. “Bro what the hell I’ve never gotten a single bp token from weekly challenges,” said one user.

“Been playing since launch. Only level 1000, but never received tokens from weekly and I’ve done them all,” replied another.

“My mate isn’t getting tokens but I am, I have finished the battle pass already, they just go in the token bank, no doubt vanish later on when season 6 comes,” explained ‘Enigma_Green.’

There doesn’t seem to be any reason why some players are getting tokens and others aren’t. I play on PC through Battle.net, have bought the normal Battle Pass but haven’t finished it yet, and I’ve been getting the tokens throughout Season 5. Others who seem to be in the same boat as me haven’t been getting them though.

The devs haven’t responded to the issue at the time of writing, but with many players starting to realize, it should be on their radar.

Luckily, you can also level up the Season 5 Battle Pass while playing Black Ops 6’s Open Beta, so you won’t lose out on any progress while trying out the new game.
